Surely if you don't get the thing revalved to suit the new spring you're wasting the effort of putting a different shock in? Isn't the spring rate miles different on NCs? OK, it's more money to have the work done, but to me it would seem to be robbing Peter to pay Paul, whoever they were....

irish roads with tight 90degree bends and high-speed bumpy straights,
the BMW shock is OK for road riding, shit for road racing.

my personal feeling with the BMW shock was i purchased on a whim after hearing others had found cheap and new shock to fit the nc with minimal modifications, however after fitting it is better than a stock NC shock so for just spring and shock they arent a bad combo,
however im unsure for longevity and wether it will degrade over the extra work the NC may put it through, ill see it through but tbh i dont hold much faith in it, Maxton next for me.

I originally did this cause id seen lots of other shocks being tried. It had a price tag of £40 when i got mine 2 years ago and did it....my original was fecked and i had little dosh. As Rick said...much better than a twenty year old jap unit but never going to compete with all the wp/maxton/nitron/ohlins or properly designed shocks. Just a cheap improvement for road use....ive changed from this to maxton and now to WP and they are better but not cheaper...you only do this mod if you don't have the £400 plus for the real thing! If you're worried about curves and graphs i'd not buy a BMW shock :)
Ive got to say that Both Maxton shocks ive had felt no where near as nice as the WP. It seems so much nicer...might just be set better though

Would fitting a hrc linkage alleviate this?
I had some spacers made since the faulkner spring didn't fit the retainers very well:

I have to say the opposite, both wp's I've had have gone wrong at some point and spares are near impossible to get hold of where as the maxtons have give me no trouble at all. Horses for courses I guess but I also found the build quality a little Chinese on the wp units.pauliealdridge69 wrote:

yes if you fit a softer spring, softer than the stock BMW spring unless your a heavyweight.krisztian_andre wrote:The insufficient damping.

I have a linkage on the way from rick that eventually i will be using with a BMW shock, from memory the BMW shock is too long by about 5mm so i'll see how that works out once its fitted, it may be fine it may mean an adjustable pull arm is needed which isnt a big deal.
Also for my weight a softer spring will need fitting rather than a stiffer one as used when fitting a BMW shock to the stock linkage, i hoping this will give the already poor damping on the BMW shock a easier time.
