my 1990 NC30 has sliders that are a kind of metallic brown, like the petrol filler cap, i believe this is the standard finish ??

They're the same brown colour as the engine, apparently 'ford metallic graphite grey' is the closest rattle can match.

Have often thought about wandering around a nearby large car dealer with a fork leg and try and get a colour match. Probably get lifted though or shot for my efforts
Have seen kia cars and Toyota with a close match might be worth a look.

If you mean the later type forks then ford graphite grey metallic will be a close match however it is by no means perfect, your better off getting some RC30 engine paint from RSbikepaints which is likely to be a much better match, there are some photos in my build thread comparing ford graphite grey to the standard engine/fork slider colour.
