VFR 525 rear sprocket mounting / orientation

Seen this issue come up a few times now. (I myself have also been guilty of this)
A 525 rear sprocket for a vfr nc30 is stepped on one side and often mounted to wrong way round.

This is INCORRECT (stepped side showing)

Another thing to note is that the chain pitch and number of teeth are stamped on the outward facing side. Also, people like Renthal put a sticker with their logo on the sprocket on the outside too. Others just engrave it, put same principal.

I knew mine was the wrong bloody way round, when i first bought the bike a new C&S had been fitted and the renthal sticker was facing inwards with the stepped edge facing out, i remember thinking at the time this was incorrect but the bloke was positive it was right so i took his word for it. Even put my new renthal sprocket on the wrong way when i replaced it in the summer!

So what if any effects/damage can this have on the bike?

nothing really its minimal, it would just wear the C&S quicker, as its will be putting force on one side of the teeth more so the rear than the front.

My new sprocket that arrived today has the teeth count stamped on the recessed side!

Are all rear sprockets made with recesses in them? I've had a look on Google and found images of Renthal sprockets with the tooth count on both plain and stepped sides! I'm sure mine's got the step facing inward, but I'm definitely going to take a look next time I'm back home.....

I think it depends on the make?

But both my sprockets (old and new) have a recessed side.

However, I usually go by the tooth count stamp as being the outside face, only came up as a problem as the original sprocket has the tooth count on the flat side (as per the OP's post) but the new sprocket has the tooth count on the recessed side, so if I mount it like that it will be opposite to the original sprocket.

Ill email the sprocket supplier and see what they say, but theres a good weight saving.

Old sprocket was 684g and new sprocket is 254g so saved 430g on sprocket alone :D
