Some help with my cb400

Post by cb400joe90 »

Hello all,

Ill just start by saying this is the best site for info regarding the cb400 super four I have come across. So fair play and keep up the good work

Im new to the world of biking and I have a cb400 super four ( project big -1 ) Year = 1994.

Firstly, How do I remove the fuel tank. I removed the 2 bolts beside the seat but the tank does not seem to want to lift from the front so I didn't force it?

Secondly, My front indicators are always on. They will still blink when I flick the switch but other than that they are always on. Is this normal for my CB or is it a fault. The rear indicators are always off until I indicate with them?

Lastly, My fan never comes on. Im thinking its the thermostat/fan switch causing the problem but are there any tests I can do before I order a new fan switch?

Thanks all & any info would be much appreciated

Regards
Joe

after you remove your rear bolts you have to lift the rear of the tank a little you then can take off the petrol pipe after turning the tap to the mid off position you also take off the two rubber hoses which are the tank breather and tank overflow you then hold the tank and slide it rearwards it will slide off the rubber front mounts you can then lift it off some tanks also have a wire going to the petrol tank fuel lever sender but not all . It sounds like you have an american bike that uses the front indicators as running lights so will stay on until you use the indicators then one should go out and the other should flash. The fan should only come on when the engine temperature rises almost to the top of the temperature gauge and you can test this by shorting across the terminals on the temperature sender on the rad the fan should then come on but if your gauge never rises above the middle of the gauge it dose not sound as if you have any problem hope this info helps rick

Thanks Rick. I will remove the tank soon. The instructions sound simple enough. Thats good news about the indicators. I dont see it as a problem that they are always on. I must check later if one of them shuts off when the other is indicating.
I have no idea if it was in America at one point. I have the bike about 6 months now and i bought it in Ireland.

Ill need to do some research into testing the fan. I have no electrical experience so I wouldnt know where to startwith shorting it?

Sorry i should have mentioned, the temp gauge does not move either. It sits at cool ( bottom) even after an hour of riding.

Hi
About fuel tank do what Rick told you.
About flashlight inticators.Don't worry all the Superfour in original contition have the indicators at ''on'' position and blinking when you flick the switch left or right.Thats why front flash have 3 wires for each one.The rear flash have 2 for each one.
About the fan.Don't worry.Especially if you live in England-Ireland or North Europe, with low temperatures.I mean i live in Greece and i have heard the fan working only in summer, after 2 hours of travel, with about 41c.
What else can anyone ask from that Motorcycle. Image
The only thing you must search is the temperature indicator.First you must take a look the wire that comes out from your thermostat. You can spray the conections with a contact cleanner. If the wire is in good contision you must check the conections inside your headlight and gouges, you can spray with contact cleanner too.

Thanks Tomigun. I removed the tank today and it was simple thanks to the info here. I will check the wire connections again when I have time.
