Wider rear wheel in a 3TJ.

Post by Alex. »

Hi Guys,

Have any of you put a wider rear wheel in a 3TJ?

As I am changing the colour scheme of my 3TJ hybrid from white/red to black/gold (both standard schemes on standard panels) I need to change the colour of my wheels.
The Foxeye 600 that I bought as a donor for the engine/electrics is black with black wheels, I think you can see where I am going with this...

Now the front wheel is identical and fits, it is currently in the bike. But I ran out of daylight to try and fit the rear wheel in my garage without power. The 600 wheel looks the same but is a 5" rim rather than the 400s 4.5" rim.

What will the effect be of using a wider rim with the 160 section tyre?

well depending on the profile ... if the tyres are the same you'll get a slightly flatter profile and therefore a bigger contact patch. The bike won't turn as fast though ... and it might have a an affect on the turn in as bikes use the combined front and rear profiles for this.

The rear brake and hub look different too so you'll need the brake hanger .... but if it was me I'd put the two wheels on scales and choose the lighter one.

The main difference between the two wheels is that the 400s is white and the 600s is black! (I'm a tart me!)

Good call about the hub and brake though, I'll have to have a good look when I can get back in the garage. Might be a problem as the 600 has a torque arm bolted to the swingarm...

If it can be made to fit, I might have to try it out with the 600 wheel and if it doesn't work too well or handles like a pig, get the tyre swapped to the 400 wheel.

Why not get them powder coated wth a gold rim ???

I was trying to avoid the cost of powdercoat in the short term!

If I do get them coated I will be using the 400 rear wheel, if the 600s fit I can still ride the bike while the 400 wheels are being done.

Besides, I am thinking about front end options that may change the front wheel, so leaving powdercoat until the front is sorted would be better for the pocket....

My mate only charges £10 for powdercoating a shotblasted wheel.
Or if you wanted my 400 has grey wheels. It was originally black and is now blue so i was going to get them done white as it doesnt look right. Could do a swap!
