Zx636r upside downies in nc30

I recently decided I'd keep the standard forks and do em up with SP1 calipers and better spring etc on my nc30......... Then as always happens something came along cheap....ZX636R 2003 front end!!

I've currently got the forks in my possession and the wheel, disks, axle, zxr400L yokes and radial callipers and hopefully the goodridge lines will be with me Wednesday!

Has anyone done this conversion before on the nc30/35 and what are their thoughts?


Some ppl say it'll be over brakes, something I doubt as the nc30 weighs more than the zx636r and I personally weigh around 100KG myself, so the extra may come in handy lol

I saw the RO spread in practical sports bike a few months back where he had put this front end in an rc30 based machine to good effect, and these forks surely have to be way more superior to the standard forks, especially when mine are weeping :0(

Only part I'm missing is the Rick Oliver conversion parts, which handily come with fresh head race bearings.

I am going the nc35 forks route but a few people mentioned the 636 forks as a possibility. I looked into it too and it seems fairly straightforward but in the end I have opted for the 35 front end. As you already have most of the parts, doubt it will give you much of a headache and it will prob cost a lot less than its costing me too!!

Are you getting the master cylinder as well? Had a quick squizz around other forums, and apparently they started out with 14mm (same as a stock NC) with these calipers, but moved to a larger radial MC after not very long. However, the 03 ZX also uses smaller front discs, 280mm, so in my mind, that means the calipers have less leverage on the brake disc than with the NCs 296mm discs and things may well even themselves out. You might want more power, but you don't want to lose all feeling through the lever, either.

Never seen or heard of an NC fitted with these forks as yet so i think you maybe the first of many, overbraked?? probably. But your pulling the lever at the end of the day and i guess you could try a different M/C if it really is that bad. Im sure it'll be fine, i once fitted 6 pots off a ZX12 or something to a RGV and it wasnt overbraked to the point it was uncontrollable, just stopped bloody well.

With all the other mods you've done/doing they should suit the bike really well, what style is the 636 front wheel then? 3 spoke, 5 spoke etc?

Speedy I already have a 14mm standard nc MC and a 16mm(5/8ths) sp1 MC so hopefully that's enough for me to work with, however if the standard is 14 mm ill just start off with the std nc30 MC, sure it'll be fine.

The novice, total cost for this mod so far for me is £480 inc the RO adapters which I have yet to buy, when you figure in the fact I've got a new tyga carbon mudgaurd/sp1 callipers/calliper adapters/nc30 forks/nc30 wheel and tyre/nc30 hell lines/nc30 yokes/clipons/nc30 callipers all to sell on now, the conversion comes down quite dramatically in price!!!! Money well spent in my eyes lol

The wheel is a three spoke with tyres and good condition gold standard discs, means ill have to try and get a rear 3 spoke of some sort to match the back, I'm a bit anal like that. I've seen reverse cylinder jims bike in the flesh and his magnesium 3 spoke would go down a treat.... Maybe go down that route for the back.

Ref over braking I'm really not sure it will at all, everyone goes on about over braking this and over raking that BUT the nc30 weighs more than the zx636r (161kg dry) so that's like saying the zx6 is over braked from standard? Yes the zx6r is faster but braking from 120mph is braking from 120mph irrelevant of the bike as Lin as it is similar weight, it's all about the modulation of the brakes (the feel).

Theres 2 RC30 3 spoke dymags on ebay now, 1 is 6" so no good but the other doesnt state a size so maybe worth asking.

Are rc30 wheels a straight swap in 5.5inch and 5 inch then?

I take it the 6inch in just too wide?

Fitting wider rears usually means fiddling about with the spacers on the wheel to stop it eating into the swingarm, which means you also need to play about a little with the swingarm pivot to shift it over to compensate, and also the gearbox sprocket. However, I *think* you run out of room to tinker at 5.5 inch wheels.

5.5 is the max you can go, if your running a 525 chain you will need to space the sprockets over, no need to mess about with the swingarm spacers. 5.75 may go if you can find one but to be honest 5.5 is too wide ideally for a 160 tyre, you want either a 5 or 5.25 if you can but i wouldnt turn a dymag down if it was 5.5.

So I can run a 160 rear tyre on a 5" wheel and a 160 with a 5.5" if I use a 520 conversion and front sprocket spacer?

Ill keep my eye out for a 5" just to keep things simple!


160 is the way forward with this build, the 150 just looks too skiny lol
