NC30 Oversize pistons – options?

Post by NGneer »

As per the title – What options is anyone aware of for NC30 oversize pistons?

I have acquired a sorted ‘spare’ engine for my forthcoming “NC30 mid life refurbishment” project so I now have the luxury of just swapping the old one out and working on the remaining one in slow time. The old engine is a decent runner, but I just feel it is due a pull through and full overhaul to get it ready for another 20ish years, rather than waiting for something to break and then playing catch up.........and I fancy doing it as another project.........when I finish the road bike......and maybe a bit of work on the track toy...

Anyway, apart from a lot of cleaning and replacing the bearings / shells and seals etc, the only ‘major’ work I would be looking at is a rebore hence also a fresh set of slightly oversized pistons. I am just looking for a good solid engine and am not chasing any mythical crank bending BHP figures. In an ideal world I would just go to Mr Honda and get a set of +1mm or +2mm OEM items with rings to suit and Bob would be my mother’s brother....if only it were that simple, eh! :(

Having trawled this forum (and the rest of the web) for a day or two it seems this topic has been broached a few times on here – I am just not sure where it actually ended up.

Mark (CMSMJ1) – started to organise a group buy of +1mm/+2mm from Omega/Accralite a couple of years ago (viewtopic.php?f=22&t=15106) but unfortunately that never seemed to come to fruition – Notably due to the company and not the collective 400GB will to get some oversize pistons made.

The only other options I am aware of to refresh the bores/pistons are:

Either the JE 433 big bore kit for (Approximately a +2.5mm bore, I think)

Or the beautiful, if expensive and rarely available, Cosworth Piston option utilizing +1 oversize FZR rings through G-force performance – Fair warning, this link contains engineering pornography  - (viewtopic.php?f=22&t=7610)

So my questions to one and all......

Did Omega/Accralite ever actually produce a +1mm or a +2mm piston for the NC30 and did they ever clarify what rings they would use?

Anyone got real life experience/feedback running the JE 433 kit?

Has anyone found any other sources of oversize pistons/rings for the NC30?

Cheers

I have had custom pistons from Mahle in the past. The quality was exceptional. I don't know if they still do custom orders anymore but it could be worth asking. Also check out the CP piston reference on the G-Force website.

I think that's a bargain, there's not many quality alternatives out there.
