Well here goes for my first hurdle in the slow strip down and hopefully the last.
On the regulator I found a yellow wire disconnected from one of the crimps going into the regulator plug and having taken off the plug it looked like someone had shoved a burnt match in there. I dug out the crimp from the plug but I`m concerned something else may have been fried.
I had a look at the wiring schematic and it looks like this yellow wire is from one of the stator windings but im wondering what could have caused this and is there any static testing I can do?
Has anyone else had this?

Common NC problem, replace plug and do a full electric test details of which can be found in the document section. Welcome to the joys of NC ownership :)

Got a spate of these going on right now. The burnt yellow wire is a very common one. If the connector is knackered, you can get them on eBay, or from Rick Oliver I believe. His price list (which it isn't on!) and contact details are stickied to the top of the 'V4 general' section of the forum. Check all the wires for similar damage, the plug gets crap thrown up on it which causes the wires to corrode over time. Best to solder as well as crimp, and even if the plug is reused, a good wrap of decent electrical insulation tape around it and back to the loom to seal it is a very worthwhile thing to do. It shouldn't have caused any other damage, but check the output after you've fixed the wire to make sure.

Thank you for the advice, its nice to know there is nothing that`s an oddity and a common fault. I think to be sure I will order another plug and check the whole loom for resistance for piece of mind. Good idea about insulating the plug. It would explain why the bike wouldn`t start

At the moment the bike is in bits and bits are in labelled boxes but ill be sure to test everything, fingers crossed nothing has been frizzled but I`m quietly confident.
