NC23 whining noise coming from battery

Post by willpisme » Wed Oct 03, 2012 6:30 pm

Hi all,

Went for a ride out today, about 100 miles and when i got back i could hear a strong whining whistling sound. Switched off the ignition thinking oh god a bearings gone in the motor, but the sound continued.
Turns out the noise was coming from the battery and there was smoke coming out of it too!

The battery is less than a month old so im guessing this is a reg/rec problem with it over charging but just wanted to confirm this.

Cheers

Sounds like your reg/rec has gone and cooked your battery, its happened to me before now, i wouldnt start your bike again until you get a new reg/rec otherwise you might pop your cdi. Also you will need a new battery again as the plates in that will now be out of shape and buggered as the battery expands when it over charges

When mine went it was charging it at 20v and popped my reg/rec at same time

i forgot to add -

i had the lights off for the whole journey until i stopped with the smoke coming out of the battery. Was miles away from home so had to ride back but had the lights switched on this time and the problem didnt happen again strangely!

Because with the lights on it will of been taking the charge away and stopping it from totally cooking, because you didnt have lights on at first all the charge was going straight to the battery nothing else ;)

Fit an R6 one. 5EB or 5SL will do. I get genuine Yamaha items for £86 delivered. I only buy brand new these days, I've had too many second hand ones fail within a year.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.
