quick question on oil level cb 400 f2

HI please could i ask the correct way to check the engine oil level on a cb 400 f2 1993 vintage should i screw the dipstick in or rest it on the case when checking thanku craig :grin:

it is usually with the cap resting rather than screwed in..and the bike upright..
