Seat tabs
So one of my seat tabs snapped off at the beginning of the summer.
I bought Plastex and repaired it. A week later it broke again. again i fixed it and again it broke. I then took it to a speiclast who plastic welded a new tab on. Yesterday it broke again.
Anyone got any tips on how to make a more solid repair?
Can i use fireglass? can i reinforce it with anything?
finally how safe it it to ride the bike with only one tab in action?

It don't matter if i'm fixin' it or ridin' it.

Re: Seat tabs
Have always found Plastex good and strong if area of repair is prepared correctly.
Sanded or dressed with a dremel remove paint from surrounding area make a v groove in the two pieces apply a small amount to get the position correct on both pieces then fill groove and overlap onto surrounding area to give repair more strength .
Dont use fibreglass have seen a few panels with bodged repairs with matting and resin looks awful and doesn't adhere to abs plastic properly.
If you wanted more strength you could also put a couple of small self tappers through side panel onto plastic seat base not pretty but effective.
Seat is held by the nylon tongue that goes under the tank at the rear mount on the subframe should safe enough short term.

Re: Seat tabs
I would be tempted to put the broken tab to one side and make a new one using the plastex. Use some wire mesh to reinforce it as well. It'll be stronger than new!

Re: Seat tabs
thats what ive done previously, repaired the area with my dremmel, made sure its all clean then made a new tab with the moulding bar and plastex. it lasts for a week or so then fails again... the join betwen the plastex and the existing plastic just seems to fracture...
It don't matter if i'm fixin' it or ridin' it.

Re: Seat tabs
The studs that are on the seat base have a step you could try making the hole in the new tab a bit larger refit seat with nuts washers lightly tightened refit tail section and six fittings sit on bike then remove and retighten seat

Re: Seat tabs
i had to plastex my 2 taps too, both were snapped when i bought my bike, i used wire mesh and plastex. i did consider using metal brackets to replicat the taps and either rivet or weld them on..... but all in all its a pretty piss poor design anyways, iv heard there is a velcro trick you can do!
but yesterday when i attempted it, my seat is nearlly a half inch off touching the rear cowl in places, unless im sat on it! lol
i might build some thing either near the rear cowl sides to catch parts of the seat when fitting, like small catches or even screw something into the sub frame, so the seat can catch on those and hold it down, much like the front of the seat nylon big catch, but on a small level.

Re: Seat tabs
If you want it repaired, post it down to me. I'll get it done with my NASA/Aerospace grade adhesive (it sticks better than shit to a blanket! It's the same stuff that holds various military jets together.) and post it back in a couple of days.

Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

Re: Seat tabs
Mine has about 2cm of clearance between the back right corner of the seat and panel too. I think thats half the problem, all the weight must be pushing on the tab on that side, rather than distributing evenly across the whole panel which is why it keeps snapping.lizard821000 wrote:

Re: Seat tabs
Hi, i recently fixed a spare seat unit up, it had two missing tabs, so i cut out the rough shape, on some spare acrylic 3-4mm i had lying round. then used two part super glue to glue it on, then reinforced it with fibre glass. the glue is really strong stuff, and allows little bit of flex.
I've had no problems, think the weight of the seat should be on the sub frame, not on the tabs so make sure they are in the correct place.
Hope this helps
