spluttering at 6-7k rpm in second upwards!

Post by Chesh » Thu Aug 30, 2012 7:49 pm

well... at first the bike started kicking into limp home mode as my speedo joint thing at the front sprocket broke.
I fixed it today and it worked like a dream for 20 mins. It will rev all the way in first and will in second sometimes if i change past 6000 rpm. I have a feeling its running rich or maybe the limp home mode circuit is getting alot of resistance when it gets hot maybe?
could also be the carbs but its been running fine since friday.
should also mention its been stood for 12 years and 6 years ago I micro vibrated all the carbs (think thats what its called)

it will go past the splutter if i ease of the gas and steadily increase the revs.

HELP!! before I give up completely :( Had so many dramas as its been stood for such along time.

Does sound like it's running rich. Give the carbs a proper clean, make sure all jets are standard and everything set to factory. New air filter and new plugs. Go from there.

The first piece of advice I give anyone is to make sure the carbs are spotless and everything is standard to factory settings, even down to an OE exhaust wherever possible. Once it's back to completely standard and running properly, then you can start changing the exhaust, etc. one step at a time and adjusting fueling to suit.

I've changed the plugs but not touched the carbs recently as I remember how much of a ball ake it was : /

I just find it strange as it runs fine for the first 20 odd mins.

A huge flame came out of the exhaust when I started it today after stopping for a bit too.....

Definitely too rich then if you have flames. That indicates that unburnt fuel is making it's way into the exhaust.

also I've unplugged one of the headlights, is that at all linked the this limp home mode thing?
I've disconnected one due to Hunts Honda giving me lights that are double the wattage and drained my battery.

Not heard of the limp mode being wired into the headlights. It may well be but it's not something I've heard mentioned before.

As for the bulbs, I guess your bike is an import? If so it will have had 35/60w bulbs. I gather Hunts have fitted 55/60w bulbs. In this case you need to carry out the relay conversion if it's not already been done before you fry your switchgear.

Also I can't see the bulbs being the cause of the flat battery. You could do with getting it load tested. If it's fine, it could be the reg/rec has given up the ghost (a common failure). The best replacement reg/rec is from an R6 5SL (03-05).

cheers for the advice. I'll try making it less rich and go from there with the carbs.
I did have a manual but lost it, where abouts are the mixture screws?
