Hi there
Welcome to the forum. Manuals are a bit thin on the ground for the 3TJ / 4DX.

For your bike though, how about a new battery ??? You need a YTX9-BS as standard
If you're really quick you can get to Hein Gerik before they shut their shops up, batteries are 60% off best to ring them first, otherwise about £30 off the bay.
If the battery gets really run down then the bike won't even bump start .... you can use some jump leads and it will probably go.

hi, thanks for your response EC. I had it on charge with an optimate for 2 days and it would turn over quite strongly but not fire. i am getting a spark, also tried with jump leads, still no joy. Feels like there is some comprerssion as when i put my hand over exhaust when it was trying i could feel something if that makes sense.
Only other thing i can think is when i was trying to bump it i heard a noise, a bit like something snapping ?
Not in a rush as i just bought it as a bit of a long term hobby

Thanks again

Ok, how are trying to start it ???
From the top then
New spark plugs.

When you turn the key you should hear a ticking and a weep weep sound. The ticking is the fuel pump, if the bike hasn't run for a while it takes longer to prime, allow it to finish ticking then (because the pump times out)
turn the kill switch to off and on it should slow and stop.
The weep weep is the EXUP servo opening and closing the exup valve - if you're not hearing this then the exup has probably seized - not good. Anyway the exup is on the exhaust just in front of the sidestand. spray the bolts with pentrating fluid and try to get the chrome cover off, then turn the ignition on/off and check the pulley wheel rotates, inspect the cables to see if they've seized or frayed.
If both of things are ok open the clutch and with the throttle closed try to start it.

Then you could take the tank and air box off spray some carb cleaner into the carb mouths and then have another go at starting - if this works then it's the carbs - take them off and clean them
