how can I date an NC21
Hi, new member, I just bought, well cleared from a lockup, two NC23 CBR400 and an NC21 FZR 400Z at least I think that is what it is, it is registered as declared manufacture 1990 but from what I have read they stoped making them in 1987? it has a single round headlamp and has sat for about 5 years, rough as a bears whatsit, just trying to work out what it is and check the year,
I am realy into British Matchless bikes and have a few but the V4 took my fancy as I have a 1930 OHC V4 Matchless Silver Hawk and I did see one mentioned in an advert for the FZR, Engine and frame numbers are at work but will post if it helps, Pat

The FZR is a Yamaha...
Anyhow.
You said it is registered? What are you trying to do exactly?

Yup VFR, it was late last night, The registration book, V5c states 1990 and I think that was a fiddle to make it seem newer when imported in 1996, trying to confirm actual year, maybe it is a 1990, frame is NC21 1072543, still loking for the engine number, found it! NC 13E 1142548, paint code NH 196 ad NH 1961 (or L) , Pat

Re: how can I date an NC21
David Silver came up with the following, I was right it had been registered as a newer model when imported!
Thank you for your email enquiry. According to the frame and engine number you have supplied this matches a VFR400KJ, 1988 year of manufacture. This bike was originally built as a rider training school bike for the Japanese market only.
The original colour code for your bike was NH-196-H. I have attached a picture from the parts book for you to have a look at. Sorry about the quality but the pictures aren't too good in the parts book.
Please contact me if you require any further information.
Regards
Karl

It wont have been a fiddle to make it look newer when importing it will prob just have been a lazy worker at the DVLA estimating the date of manufacture

If you want to date an NC21, you need to brush up your chat up lines

Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.
