Try fitting the temp sender in the hole, it wont leak then.

Well that doesnt help me try and fix a problem does it ! I know the temp sensor will stop it

The reason i ask is cause when an engine cold surly the stat should be closed and surly if its closed it wouldnt leak? Im trying to pinpoint a problem so i dont buy bits i dont need

Even when the engine is cold the coolant has to be allowed to flow.

The pump for the coolant system runs directly from the engine, so is constantly turning when the engine is running.

If you took your thermostat out you'd see a small hole in the metal edge around the assembly of the thermo which allows coolant to flow.

Imagine you revving your engine with it cold forcing all that coolant onto a dead end, high pressure leak and potentially bang me thinks ;)

So short answer, yes it should leak.

It leaks when engines off an the rad caps open , i just thought it shouldnt , whats the easiest way to test the stat?

I know puttin it in a pan and cook it basically but what should i physically see happen to tell me if its faulty?

As the temperature rises above 80 C the valve will open.

Plus check how far it opens, I believe the haynes says it should be fully open to 8mm.

I had to replace mine the other week after the bike over-heated twice on a 20 mile journey, it was only opening 3mm!
