Battery Overheating
Hi People
Got a bit of a problem with my NC30 race bike.
After coming in from a longish race (20 Laps) there is a strong smell of sulpher coming from the battery?? So i'm guessing it's overheating any ideas as to why this may be happening???.
Cheers

Re: Battery Overheating
sounds as if its getting overcharged?im guessing your still running the bike with the reg rec?
you could run a total loss system where the battery doesnt get charged at all........
first thing to do is check what the charge rate is,it should be between 13.5-15.5v @5000rpm,if its above this then its definately getting too much of a charge.
the reg rec converts the ac voltage produced form the alternator to dc voltage and it regulates the output from 240v to 12v,its actually slightly more depending on the condition of the battery,if it starts to fail then it can be putting too much power to the battery which can cause it to overheat.

Re: Battery Overheating
Yep, as wull has said it'll be the charging system.
Usually the reg/rec, but commonly also the stator. Take the plug off the reg/rec and check it out, my guess is there will be some signs of charring. Check the battery voltage at all different revs. What sort of reg/rec does it have?
NC30's are notorious for having a dodgy electrical system, good thing is you can fix it up relatively easily. Yam R6 regs work better than ANY honda units imho (they still can't build a good one), attach it with standard spade plugs soldered into the loom. Check the wires from the stator to the reg/rec for any damage, I think you'll probably also need a new battery.
These problems suck, but can be fixed up in a way so that it never happens again.

Re: Battery Overheating
The Battery is fairly new an the REg/rec is not a factory unit it has heaps of fins an is fairly large clump of metal :) I did notice some burn type maks on one of the connectors??. I'm seriously thinking of running total loss?? Any feedback on this
