Carb help

Post by bazz » Tue Jul 31, 2012 12:28 am

Hi, i was hoping someone could help me with some carb advice, i bought a project nc30 a while back which was crash damaged and have slowly been compiling bargain parts for it since to get it back on the road, upon inspection i found the original carbs had damage to one of the casings causing the carbs to separate slightly creating an air leak, so i bought a cheap set of carbs that by the looks of them i can only assume the previous owner stored them in a hedge (see pics), the condition and missing diaphragm didnt bother me because i only needed the cases and a good clean would sort that out.
However on inspection of the bowls i found all the internals to be in very good condition and even looked like they had never been apart as the screws and jets etc all looked untouched unlike my originals which look like they were last dismantled with a hammer!
All good news until i took the carb tops off to find that the slides are different, red rings, two holes (see pic), at first i thought i had bought the wrong set but from what i have read these are uk spec? would these be better? anyone got a spare uk spec diaphragm and needle set up seeing as i only have 3? or should i just bung the jdm spec ones in?
Any advice?
cheers
bazz

Whatever slides you put back in there just make sure they're all the same type. Make sure you use the correct front and rear needles (and emulsion tubes also).

The jetting guide document explains this in more detail, hope it helps: http://www.400greybike.com/docs.htm

Thanks cammo appreciate that, is there any advantage to the uk spec slides and/or needles or are they just different?

Maybe fetch more money to somebody restoring a UK spec bike (but those carbs look minging..)

The carbs were setup to UK spec (slightly larger jets, different needles etc)

Due to the altitude / climate difference and the UK bike not being power restricted by law.

I dont think theres any advantage to the carbs, either set can be setup well on the dyno.

Yeah they are a bit crusty lol, just wondered if the uk internals were superior in any way, but in that case i will just use the internals from the original jdm spec ones (if servicable of course) and the bodies of these (after a good clean!) i will probably leave making any changes untill i can road test it because it looks to be standard including original can.
cheers neo

think the uk carbs slides already have the drilled(3rd) hole in the slides to help with the mid range BURP
and the shim on the needle already present as said, jetted for the uk when there was no restriction.

cammos guide will see you through mate, awsome write up.

iv got uk carbs too, on a jap import,
