Bigger airbox on an NC29

Post by matt69 » Wed Jul 18, 2012 6:26 am

As I now have a (slightly damaged but that will be fixed) dummy tank cover and an alloy tank underneath it, there is about 40mm of airgap above the top of the airbox. I already have a ramair system and bigger airboxes are often touted as a way of making more power.

Has anybody ever tried to run a bigger airbox on an NC29 or seen anybody who has? I do have a spare airbox and the idea is to cut the top off it and using some heat maleable plastic shape it to fit the space and then glue an extra section in and see how it goes.

Thoughts?

Matt, the best idea I can think of is, either source a FCR Ram Airbox. Which are MUCH larger. Or Bascally take it to a fiberglass shop and have them add on to what you currently have with puddy and make a larger copy of what you have.

Hi Matt66, what is the theory that a larger airbox will produce more power. The engine can only flow a certain amount of air and most so called ram air systems are not ram air at all... even HRC call it a "cold air duct system". A true pressurised air box is a very complicated affair all together. just dont want you spending ££ and time on something that will not produce more BHP... cheers Col.

Col, I've seen it mentioned a few times in a couple of older bike builds, the last one was a couple of years ago and the RMKD ZXR400 build in Performance Bikes mag, where the builder said the bigger airbox was the key to getting more power.

I'm certainly not running out to lay down a big wad of cash, the radiator has put paid to that, although the rad isn't much more than a set of Supercorsas.

I thought I'd kept the article, but had a pretty decent rifle through all the articles I've kept for ideas and can't seem to find it.

Cajun,

When you say much larger, how much is much? Have you got an side by side images.

Your idea sounds much better.
