I sounds to me that the gear level won't return to the centre position when you move your foot away is that right?
I so it could be the detent spring under the clutch cover that's broken or weak.
It helps to return the gear lever to it's middle position and if it's broken the gearbox will think it you still have your foot on the lever and won't select the next gear.
If the bike has been sat for a long time the steel clutch plates might be rusty and sticking in the basket causing problems. just give it a good ride as that sometimes helps.
Dobbs.
Its really loose it seems. About 1 1/2 inches up or down freeplay from static. Ill have a look at that spring or see about getting it replaced anyway when I take a look. The issue is that I can select any other gear with motorcycle off except for neutral. If I have the bike down to first and pull up on the gear lever it wont come up all the way or make the click to let you know that it changed gear. It just has a lot of resistance and refuses to budge. Any other gear is fine. I can switch through the entire range except for neutral.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far everyone. Ill be giving everything a try once Im not assed out from work.

the rearset made up of 3 parts. recently mine was shaky because of the wear n tear in between the footrest n the rod. so i got a friend to custom made a spacer to nicely fit in. but i'm not sure whether yours is like mine. here's the pic:

The gear level throw though neutral from first to second is the longest so if you have a loose linkage or maybe something else loose in the selector mechanism first & second will be affected more than the other gears.

Well folks, turns out the problem was not the bike. It was just me being a colossal idiot and knowing not a single thing about motorcycles. But a friend came by and showed me whats up. I will be doing a rebuild on the clutch soon as Im sure it needs it by now and will be tightening up the gear lever linkage too.
So nest items on the shopping list are:
chain
sprocket
battery (this one holds no charge and I dont believe its a short)
rebuild on the forks
So more to come as I attempt to freshen up the bike in the coming months. Thank you everyone for all the helpful suggestions as Im sure Ill be able to put them to good use in the coming weeks.

Sorry for the late reply. But like I said I know nothing about motorcycles and therefore didn't realize that neutral is in-between 1st gear and 2nd. I just assumed that it was all the way at the bottom and that was why I kept trying to change gears. So, crisis averted and I continue to feel like an idiot. Anyways hope to have it ready and JCI'able within the month so I can take the BRC with it. Fingers crossed.
