'30 Eccentric Hub - Material / Welding

Morning all,

This is a bit of a vain task I've set myself... I intend to weld up and dress the torsion tabs on a spare hub, that has seen the use of the dreaded drift (like most).

* Anybody else had a pop at this or considered it?
* Anybody know the material? Seems fairly hard and non-magnetic. Cast Stainless or some wonderful non-ferrous alloy?

Any insight whatsoever greatfully accepted!

The eccentric hub is the part of the bike that adjust the chain tension and is prone to getting its lugs hammered off by unknowledgeable half wits.

Very good quality aluminium I built up 3 tabs on mine the filed to correct shape. You'll need access to a tig welder

tlnut, you say quality aluminium!? I was quizzing one of our more handy chaps at work and he suspected it was die cast aluminium otherwise known as 'gunmetal'. He said said if you arc onto it with the TIG and it turns blue (the surface not the arc) then its pretty unweldable... On top of that, when I tried dressing a couple of light indentations on the contact surface of the diameter of the hub, I was surprised how hard the stuff was.

I much prefer your response though. I'll put the project back on the 'to do' list, and have a bash once we've got some more Argon.

i've always used a drift on mine (for 120,000 miles) with no problems. i have the tool but it's a PITA to use IMO.

hi i recently been welding up a crack on my thermostat housing and that was cast aluminium, because it's cast you get all the crap float to the top as you weld but i upped the cleaning cycle and used a bigger tungsten. alittle more difficult but no way unweldable but then again it didn't turn blue either...

...just be prepared to want to clean the finish after with a file if you want pretty.

Never had a problem really. Clean it up well will weld great. It definitely won't be monkey metal it the only thing holding the rear wheel on!!! Cast alloy is denser than sheet ect and normall much better quality
