Problems changing up!

Post by pt20485 »

Hi everyone,

I have an '89 NC30 and i've recently been having problems changing up through the gears, in particular 3rd and 4th and it doesn't seem to make any difference whether the bike is warm or not, or whether it's being ridden hard. Changing down isn't a problem at all.

I've had my bike for a few years and i've been using the site for a while for help with the usual minor problems that occur but I haven't found any topics relating to a similar problem on here.

Does anyone have any experience of this or have any ideas on what the problem might be.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.

Oil change gear linkage clutch adjustment if none of these then maybe gearbox fault someone more tech minded might help you.

I'd start with the basics if you haven't already.

1) Check chain and adjust if necessary.
2) Lubricate chain.
3) Check the gear linkage is correctly adjusted, if the linkage joint has come lose it may not be correctly engaging the gears.
4) If it hasn't been serviced in a while, replace the oil.
5) Check the clutch is operating correctly.

If all of the above doesn't rectify then let us know.

This may sound stupid, but have you recently changed your motorcycle boots?

I changed from Oxtar to Sidi last year and kept hitting false neutral for ages until I got used to them, just a thought.....

Try some clutchless upshifts, should be smooth if done right.

Get into 2nd or 3rd.. when you come to change up a gear (8000rpm is good) lift the gear lever up until you feel pressure and slightly back off the throttle while keeping the pressure, it should shift into the next gear.

If it's still trouble there could be something bent inside.
