Yes, I have had a similar situation so it may have just come apart inside. From memory.. carefully unscrew the switchgear, inside there is a box attached to the red button, carefully open this box, take care of small parts and a very springy spring that may jump out, use a finger to keep it in place. Inside the switch there should be two copper contacts running along the bottom, the spring in a cut out guide and a small pin size bent piece of steel, similar to a starting handle shape this has one end up, the other down. Clean everything down, place the copper in position if its moved, place one end of the pin metal in its hole now place the inner piece of the button in its guides, watching where the other part of the pin metal fits in a groove, add the spring to its slot. Now, keeping it level with a finger replace and clip this into the black part with the wires, screw everything up and try it. It should click in and out.

Hope thats not too confusing, its actually very easy to do.

start by blasting it with WD40, before taking it apart.

Amorti is right, give this a go first, I forgot to add that. But in my defence and experience it is a good chance it will be the small bentpin that will have popped out and be lying on the bottom of the switch box, usually done by an enthusiastic press of the switch.

do ya mean blast the button with WD40 while its still on the handle bar like?
and if i do have to take it apart do i have to take the little box off the bike i.e. disconnect the wiring from the bike or can i work on it while its still attached??

Yes, using wd40 and the straw attachment, start by trying to blast it through the side where the button is while thumbing the switch. If that dont work try just opening the gear and squirting a bit on the box opening. while thumbing the switch, see if it loosens off. Put a rag around the switch to catch excess oil.

If not, do as I said above, no wiring to be de soldered and can be worked on while on the bike. So, unscrew the gear, unscrew the wiring clip, unscrew the white switch box.. move it to one side then find the small tabs keeping the box together, use a fingernail to pull them open slightly, the box clicks open and everything pops out so be careful.

a piccy i done long ago..
