Odometer stopped turning

Post by stutto » Mon Sep 15, 2008 12:55 pm

I am after some help, as above my odometer has stopped on 41699 but my 'trip distance' is still working correctly.

Has anyone else had this or could hazard a guess at the problem?

Yes I have searched but only found threads where the odo has completely stopped.

Thanks.

Doesn't sound like a problem to me ;)

Seriously though, if you have a look in the back of the speedo, you'll see that the odo mechanism is quite a complicated little item. First port of call would be a quick check for dirt etc. But given that for obvious reasons the odo isn't designed to be stopped (and can't be tampered with easily) I'd say it's buggered. If the speedo and trip are working fine, I'd sat grab a new speedo or live with it.

Sorry to drag this one back up but my problem is still there, I now know that the white barrel turns but fails to turn the five black barrels which now still read 41700.

Is there any way to get the others turning again? Disconnect-reconnect at the speedo or attach a drill to the sprocket end maybe?

I've got the same problem on mine, it's stopped on 14,999 miles. Trip and speedo working fine also. Obviously not in a massive rush to fix it, but would be nice to know before I rip a UK speedo to pieces.

i've taken one apart before, there are lots and lots of plastic gear wheels all connected together that turn the odometer, trip and speed each time the speedo cable turns. If two are working and one not then sounds like some of the plastic gears may have broken/stripped - these things aren't easy to pull apart so that you can't fiddle the mileage. easiest thing would be to get another speedo
