What oil for NC30?

I don't have my Haynes in front of me, but the Honda service manual suggests 10W-40.

1. This should be ok, no?

At the risk of starting a war of words, I confess to using a mixed fleet oil in the NC30. Two cars and a bike totals quite a lot of oil used and a one oil fits all solution has a lot of attraction provided there is no compromise on performance and the price puts "motorcycle" oils to shame.

Info on the web suggests it is a common practice for a large number of bike riders with no complaints. Clutch slip from too much moly appears to be the only reason people poo poo the idea, although apparently mixed fleet oils use a form of moly that differs to that used in the older oils and does not have a detrimental affect on wet clutches.

It all depends on what oil your using and how often you change it.

Motocycle gearboxes have been proven to be harder on oil than a car engine and thus break it down quicker.. even after 800 miles most oils have lost 20 - 30% of their original viscocity rating.

Heres an interesting article from way back in 1994... note the bike they were testing was an old V65 magna, which is acutally quite similar to an NC30 engine.

So from that article it is safe to assume all modern rated oils (SL >) are ok as long as you change them 800 miles or so.

Older / cheap branded oil might not be as well lasting as any modern oil.

I used to run loads of cheap SL Mineral oil through the NC24 I got at a bargain price, changing every 800 miles and I have no problems in over 10,000 miles of riding.

If you want to do less frequent changes then a high performance fully synth bike oil like Honda Ultra S9 might be the way to go.. in any modern super high performance 600 / 1000cc i'd really not recommend cheap oil, but for an older NC30 normal oil doesn't seem to be too much of an issue providing it's regularly changed.
