New to VFR 400

Post by pete_vfr » Thu Feb 23, 2012 6:21 pm

Hi all ive been rideing for a while and decided it was time to give track rideing ago and the vfr 400 seemed a good bike to start on, so i purchaced a 1989 vfr 400 Track bike from ebay, got it home and it would not start, took out plugs ,wet and black so dried and cleaned carbon off and its started up first press however i let it warm up and thought id give it a rev it got to about 5-6k rpm and started dying and spluttering and would go no higher, i was wondering would this be sorted with new plugs? or do i have to do full carb strip? it idles fine and revs fine to 5-6k i would have thought if it was the carbs it would run crap from the start any help on this would be much appriciated dont mind getting the tools out but dont know much about these bikes shes lovely little bike and feel i owe it to her to put some work in and get her running smooth.cheers all Pete

hi pete welcome to the fold, me personally id service the carbs as a matter of peace of mind really as buying a bike from ebay you wont really know whats been done nor how long its been sat with fuel festering in the carbs, if your not too clued up on the vfr then camo has a guide in the v4 workshop that will take you through all you need to know as far as getting a good base setting for the carbs plus ruling out a lot of issues along the way , work on one carb at time on a clean bench and you cant go wrong,,
use the search function on the forum to find answers to most probs as they most likley already been covered in one way or another if not shout out and one of the many great members on here will be along to help, its a great forum i certainly would be stuffed if i didnt have the help ive had from here

to be honest i wouldnt start raising needles and drilling slides till you got the bike running nice, my slides are not drilled and the needles are in stock positions and i dont have any fueling or running issues , my advice would be run through the guide , check, clean, re-set the pilot screws, jets etc then get them back on the bike , see how it runs

Cheers for that mate i thought it was the done thing, ill just do all the checks and cleaning then ive read a few things about when the speedo is missing this can cause the same problem being a track bike the speedo is off and nothing conected into the plug so i take it that will definatly cause this problem to, ill check this resistor mod out more too. cheers pal

Sounds like the speedo has been removed without the having the restrictor mod done.
Read the nc30 deristrictor mod in the document library on the main page.

Also when i got this bike back to the garage i noticed that the suspension is soft as hell is this the norm for nc 30, i always have my suzuki suspension set quite hard when i want to hit the deck tried soft suspension before and always seems to bike is unsettled mid corner?

Yeah the shocks are undersprung. Get it rebuilt with a higher spring rate to suit your weight. And get a rick oliver (member on the forum and resident genius) frork upgrade to match it.
As for the resistor im not 100% sure, but i would go with the drawing(2ohm). I have heard of people doing the mod with no resistor and just looping a bit of wire.
