Track bike wiring

Post by Bike_Nut » Tue Feb 07, 2012 1:32 pm

Started my track bike build project for the 1st time today and all seems good, engine starts easily and sounds crisp and my race loom works.

I still have a bit of an issue to sort out. As the top yoke where the ignition switch bolts on was broken I cut it off completely and smoothed it all in. Looks better, and the ignition switch is just extra weight.

My problem is now what to do to isolate the battery? Do most race bikes have a FIA style isolater in the main battery wire? Is it ok to just put a heavy duty toggle switch on the right side of the bike where the ignition plugs into the main loom?

Also, why does the fan also get routed through the ignition switch? I thought that would be wired to be able to come on while the bike is switched off, like most car fans.

Thanks in advance

I would have thought that the type of isolation switch would be subject to the regulations of whichever racing organization you are a member of. In other words whatever gets you through scrutineering.

Answer to second question, fan power is through ignition switch to negate likelihood of over discharging the battery, be it from duration required to cool the engine or failed temp switch that does not turn off.

It's a Honda thing.

My ZXR's fans come on when the bike is off, so if you shut it off with a running fan it'll still run until it cools down.

As said above.. might be incase you have a faulty temp switch.
