decisions decisions

Post by nakes999 » Mon Feb 06, 2012 8:27 pm

I love my RVF but finding parts here in SA is becoming harder and harder and the cost of sourcing parts from abroard is becoming more and more expensive... so I'm thinking of selling it and getting a later VFR800 but will I regret it?

I've only ever had 400cc bikes... my first was a NC24 before I got the NC35 and had it since 2004... but it just seems that more and more things are failing as it gets older and finding replacement parts is sometimes impossible, works out expensive and it's inconvenient without transport when the bike is off the road... soooo what to do what to do....

Anyone else ever find themselves in a similar situation? What did you end up doing and did you regret the decision?

Just curious...

I'd prefer to do that but just depends on the finances over the next few months...

I do that now but it's expensive... and takes long... and since the bike is currently my only transport, it's quite inconvenient...

Sounds like you are doing loads of mileage with the poor bike? That normally leads to higher costs. They are strong, but I would not like to use mine as a commuter bike it would just feel wrong.

Old bike are expensive even if you dont' use them so much.

It's a mini-race replica not really a commuter.

How far do you commute? Something like a CG125 costs pennies to run and fix and you can get parts from anywhere.

Failling that something like a parellel twin, the older ER500 Kawasaki is commuterlike and cheap as chips.

They'll also be more comfortable.

don't know if you've tried them but I believe a company called Racebox in Jo'berg are your best bet for anything local to do with the Honda 400s

I believe SA also has Gumtree classifieds and noticed on a few occasions a vast number of listings for things to do with the VFR and RVF, so that might be another place to look also, if you haven't already that is

good luck to ya mate...I'm sure we're all in agreement for you to try and keep your RVF

Thanks for the opinions guys...

Yes, I check gumtree & other classifieds regularly but not found anything on there yet...

I've bought things from Racebox before but they didn't have a radiator when I called before... will maybe check with them again.

Hmmm a CG125 sounds like a good idea.. I was also thinking maybe a yamaha TW200

I don't commute that much... I do about 30 to 60km most days of the week... somedays I don't use the bike... It's only got around 46000km on the clock and had 16000km when I bought it in 2004. It's been Really good and reliable except for a few things like rectifier and fork seals... other than that I've not had much problems but it seems that things like radiators and clutch may be starting to go now... and the cost of replacing those things may add up to A LOT here in SA.
