Just trying to cut weight on my track bike project and thought a nice cheap mod was to swap the coolant reservoir for a HRC bottle style overflow.

Firstly I guess it's just a case of re-routing the pipes that go to the standard res to the new one? Also the old res has the fill line, how full do people fill there bottle overflow reservoir.

Lastly a question that people will have to forgive if I sound a little stupid? I notice most race bikes have the reservoir hung off the clock bracket in the nose cone of the bike but to me and my uninformed eye this seems like a bad place to be adding weight. When thinking about mass centralisation wouldn't it be better to locate the bottle in the standard location on the bike instead of hanging extra weight off the front end? Maybe this is not actually possible or people put it in the nose for easy access, any info on this would be great.

On a track bike you fill the radiator up and that's that, it will only expel the water into the overflow bottle when it gets hot and expands (mine only does this the first time after I've refilled the radiator.) They tend to have a "happy" level that they like to operate at. So after the first time your at the track check the overflow for any excess and empty it after that if should be fine.

The reservoir on road bikes is used as a safety measure for the sods that don't check there fluids levels.

Also the amount of weight the plastic bottle weights I doubt it will make any difference wherever you mount it. And if its mounted to the instrument brace it wont affect the front end weight as the only front end weight you want to lose is the unsprung weight from your suspension.

ie, that's why Rossi keeps crashing because Ducatis have no front end weight.

That's explains it very nicely, I had presumed the bottle was used like a reservoir but I gues it is only an overflow.
