new fzr400 owner
HI all, new to the forum and just bought a 400/600 project will have loads of questions to come, but the first question is about the clip ons
My bike is a 89 F reg and the bars fit under the yoke and the top toke is flush with the top of the suspension legs.. just looked at a few pics of others and the bars are on top of the yoke??
Cant see the point in raising the front 44mm to make the leg flush with the yoke to fit the bar underneath? but may be missing something..
cheers

Welcome to the forum
Ok - first we need to sus out what model you have.
Do you have twin headlights with air intakes under them ? If so it's a 3EN2, it will have a flat top yoke and it's correct that the clipons fit under the yoke.

A festive 3en2 yesterday

Thats mine.... good just looked diff from others and wondered if someone had changed things around....
that leads me to my second question I bought the bike as a repair as the engine doesn't run nice you have to ride the clutch as it bogs down on low revs and around town but when it gets over 7000rpm it takes off??
any idea or were to look will be great....

Take the tank cover off and check the airbox is there, and if it is then have a clean of the carbs. It's a not a very glamorous job, but it might need doing. If, once you've done all of that it still doesn't run ok, you might need to alter the needle clip positions but do the small stuff first.

One thing with these are the rubbers between the airbox and the carbs - they go hard over the years and then they're almost inpossible to get on, it could be that the airbox is there but not on the carbs.
You need to take the rear side panels off to get the tank cover off because they clip into it. Cleaning the carbs is always a good thing, you need to take the fuel tap lever off before you lift the tank and don't loose the cross head screw holding it. A lot of fuel taps are broken because of this, if yours is you'll need to get a new tap (if you want a reserve).

You can use a R6 shock with a red spring and change the dogbones to restore the seat height (Kayla makes them). There's no point in jacking up the rear FZR400's handle well enough without loading the forks.
If you want adjustable forks look for a T'cat / FZR Foxeye / YZF750 or maybe early R6 (RWU) front ends, You can also drop a TRX850 swingarm / wheel / brake with a bit of machining to get a 17" rear (but you need the front end or it handles weird)

Re: new fzr400 owner
few new questions.... will the 600 clocks plug straight into the 400 loom? I have 400 clocks in Km at the moment what to change to 600 for the mph and rev..
Also does the 400/600 have a clutch switch as at the moment the engine will only start in neutral, I can see a micro switch under the clutch lever and a two wire connector but cant find where it goes....
finally I have replaced the carbs with another set and seems to tick over and rev up ok (haven't got it on the road under load yet) the carbs come with indivdual cone K and N type air filters are these better than the original airbox or should I put the std airbox back on..???

Re: new fzr400 owner
Yes the clocks should drop straight in
There's a neutral switch on the 400 and I think there's one on the 600 too. You should be able to start the bike in gear with the clutch in and side stand up, or in neutral with the side stand down.
Running K+N's isn't advisable. The carbs need to draw in still air, if your riding the amount of air will fluctuate and so will the mixture. The carbs have probably been jetted for the filters so check and see what the jets are.
You could use a manual for the FZR600 - if you engine has 3 fins on the head / barrels then it's a 3HE model - to find the standard 600 settings the 400 airbox is the same as the 600.

Re: new fzr400 owner
600 clocks are a lot bigger and have different mounting points so will stick to the old 400 I'll get a speedo overlay..
Onto brakes I have a set of blue stop calipers from a yamaha thunderace, thinking of fitting these any thoughts will I need to change the master cylinder from the 400 to the thunderace??
