NC30 - oil sump is stuck

Post by lukemillar » Sun Nov 27, 2011 6:49 am

Ok, I'm out of ideas. I'm in the process of stripping my spare NC30 engine, (so it isn't in the frame) and can't get the oil sump off. It looks like it may have been stuck on with some kind of gasket goo, but absoultely nothing will make it budge.

I have definitely removed all 12 bolts, and my gentle hammer taps have now become quite full on, but it hasn't moved a mm. I can't even get a feeler gauge between the surfaces it is that solid!

Does anyone have any advice/ideas as I am all out :(

Using a rubber mallet or nylon hammer?

I would be hitting the join, fairly hard too. I owned a CBR250 before the RVF, and when I changed the sump, I had to hit it pretty damn hard to dislodge it. The RVF one came off relatively easy, there wasn't any gasket goo on it. But yeah, if there's gasket goo, you will have to hit it pretty hard around the join, that shit is like glue.

Yeah, it's a nylon mallet, but it isn't moving.

Are there any dowel pins on the sump? i.e will hitting the cover on the side dislodge it or will any dowel pins prevent that sideways movement? From the fiche it seems like there are none, but there is at least 2 on every other cover on the NC engine!

Cheers
Luke

If I'm thinking of the right part, could you not take off the oil dran plug, put your finger in a rip it off?

I guess I could try that! I'm thinking I would need a pretty ripped and muscled finger to get this guy off, but I'm willing to try anything!

Stupid question - can you whack these things too hard? I feel like I'm already getting pretty brutal with it...

If hitting it with a hammer will not get it off, sticking your finger in the drain hole will certainly not get it off. As for dowel pins, no there are none on the sump. The only 'cover' with dowel pins is the clutch cover, there's none on the alternator cover, or on the cam covers..

Yes, you can hit anything too hard, but this is the only way to remove it, you could get a butane torch around the seal and that might loosen up the gasket goo, then give it a few more whacks. Otherwise just keep hitting, I would be hitting downwards diagonally, so it will dislodge one side a bit, then just tap around the gasket and lever it off.

There are dowels on the heads and water pump cover as well

Could you not find one of those tools that I've forgotten the name of. They go in the hole like an l but then there's a bit on the end that can rotate so it becomes a T. It's what they use to lift drain covers off the road if that makes sense.
