afternoon all took the vfr out for its mot today and it passed with flying colours but it not running right its hesitant when you first crack the throttle open then it has flat spots all over the place and fillanly it wont rev out it sounds like an air leak to me but i wanted to get your veiws.

secondly and i know this is a long shot does anybody have a picture or a printable file of a nc24 mph dial i know neo was playing with one ages ago and i was wondering if anyone or the good man himself still has the file so i can play around with the idea

Will have a dig around.

How smooth is the idle.. lumpyness is often a sign of carb inbalance or airleak or both.

If you crank the idle upto around 2000rpm, spray carb cleaner around the carb rubbers and listen for RPM changes, this indicates a leak.

Failing that, strip, clean and rebuild carbs ensuring all parts are correct and in proper carbs and set properly.

115 mains all around.. 5 hole emulsion tubes in rear, 6.8mm float heights and pilot screws 2 - 2.25 turns out (ensuring spring, rubber gromet and washer are present)

thanks neo and if you can find it would be very greatfull could even bung you afew quid paypal for the use of it. will strip the carbs off once the new clamps arrive as at some of them arnt in the best of shape and will go over the carbs again see if it helps, i will say that for the range of reves it was working in what a sound and what a bike for a 24year old its a nice ride and much better with a hagon shock on the back

Yep decent motor!

The NC13e is a good engine.

The NC30 is just much more refined... stiffer frame, better suspension and brakes and the firing order of the engine makes it much smoother.

The Hagon shock will help no doubt with the 24!

Hopefully you'll get it up and running well soon!

neo did you manage to dig the dial out if not how did you do it was it very dificult to get the mph markings in the right place ive tried once and im not sure that they are right

It's very easy if you take the right approach.

I took off the original face.

Before removing the needle tape the back mechanisim so it can't move.. theres a slight amount of preload on the needle and if you fluff it up you'll be fiddling forever, I usually wind the needle forward to 50mph (80km/h) and tape the back so it stays there before popping the needle off.

You need to pull the little pin out the face too so it'll lay flat on a scanner.

I scanned in the dial and then in photoshop created a new 'layer' over the top of the old dial.

On this new layer I could draw / paint whatever.. working out where the mph should go is easy. 80km/h = 50mph et al.

I printed this dial onto Overhead Transparency film from Staples

Rather than sand the face clear on the old dial I cut a replica dial from some acryllic sheet the same thickness and drilled the appropriate holes.

Before sticking the face to the plastic I found the bulbs were 'too bright' so the dial appeard faded, I apply some old 'black' window tint film I had to the dial before i stuck the face to it and that solved the problem.

Can't find the picture I have on this computer either i'm afraid.

right so ive checked all the carbs over and replace the old bent clamps for new ones and balanced them all up it runs alot better now although there is a slight flat spot in the mid range sorta 5-7k and it doesnt want to idle at 1.3k more like 2k and it creeps up once its hot its running 115 alround and pilot screws are 2.5 turns out it has standard air box rcv4's full downpipes fronts and rears and collector box and has a viper end can with a db killer added to it as it didnt have one b4,

neo i have noticed thet the speedo doesnt seem to move untill im doing what feels like 20mph the speed light comes on at sorta 30mph so i think someone has messed with it be and lost the pre load on the needle how difficult is it to set it back up so its right again or is it easier to just buy a second hand speedo or clocks

Ive never managed to get a set of clocks right again before but it should be possible with a bit of fiddling.

speed light some come on at 80km/h / 50mph

how much does the idle go up?

Most bikes tend to idle a bit better / faster when warm.. my 30 idles at aroudn 900 when cold (and its a little lumpy), when warmer it idles at 1200 and perfect.

are all your pilot circuits clean? on the underside of the carbs where they goto the engine, if you look near the butterfly you'll see afew pin sized holes in each carb.. these passageways need to be spotless for it to idle properly.

did you check for airleaks?

whats the float heights?

Also try backing in pilot screws 1/4 of a turn
