more problems... confused to f*ck
I fitted porndogs 33bhp kit to my nc30, using new carb rubbers. i did this according to the stickied guide on here, but didnt touch anything apart from what i had to to get the carbs off. the bike started after i first fitted these, but soon developed problems. The idle seemed to be low, (it only ran with the choke on) and it would seem to be fine when cold then worse as it warmed up- the idle would go from 5k (full choke) and drop to 2k (still full choke) then stop with no choke. There is a strong smell of exhaust from the right hand side, and something dripping off the exhaust when its running? The bike ran fine before, i have not played with any mixture screws or anything. It wont even start anymore. It turns over, and sometimes will kick in, just to die again almost instantly. Is this an easy fix/simple mistake? Please tell me it is!

could be the floats have stuck open now you've disturbed it and it's flooding. Might be worth pulling them off again and removing the bottom of the float bowls and checking the condition. just be careful to not bend the floats. tho it's easy to check float heights, do a search on here. I stipped mine last week, it's one of the first things I do on a new bike and gives me a feel for how much 'tinkering' a bike has seen. Luckily mine was spotless inside and didn't look as tho it had ever been apart. ... . . tho i doubt this is the case at nearly 20 years old

I will try that, but taking the carbs off again was really a last resort! Spent far too long swearing at them to do that again in a hurry! but i suppose its better than a very expensive garage ornament...

dripping? that would indicate condensation, i would hope that water from the cooling system isnt leaking through the head gasket/s whats the colour of the water when you remove the cap from the top radiator? is it creamy/oily?

Im not sure, ill have to check when i get home. Would that just be a case of new gaskets and a coolant flush if it was the issue? It definately doesnt smell like petrol thats dripping off

The liquid coming from the exhaust is probably just condensation.
You've probably just flooded it. It may just need a different way to start it now that it's restricted. Start with full choke and no throttle and slowly rolling the choke off as it starts to hold the revs.

Tried full choke no revs, cuts out almost instantly, if it starts atall.

have you cleaned and given the carbs a good service?burningalive409 wrote:Tried full choke no revs, cuts out almost instantly, if it starts atall.
the choke system could be blocked!
it wont be petrol in the exhaust as it would ignite in the system if it got hot enough,
a head gasket change on theses bikes isnt cheap or a quick job! its £100 for just the gaskets, you can do it with engine in the frame but its tricky,

No, didnt want to go messing about with the carbs since it ran fine before, looks like ill have to do it now! Do you know of any good online guides that cover balancing float bowls etc as that isnt covered in cammo's guide? Ill take them apart and give them a good clean/check jets etc though, see if that helps.

Before taking the carbs apart. Try removing the restrictors and starting it up. If it starts then you'll know for sure it's the restrictors and you'll probably have to make some alterations to carb settings to suit the bike restrictors.
Funny bikes these 30's.
