Can I do clutchless upshifts on a nc29?!
Hi all,
Can I check, before I try it on the bike?
Can I do clutchless upshifts on a nc29?
Any tips on doing it?
I have one extra tooth on the rear sprocket, if that makes any difference?
Any help would be appreciated

yup, i do it loads. had to learn how after my bike accident in 2005 as i had a screwed left wrist. killed to hold in the clutch.
BUT i have always used clutch coming down the box.. i know of a few who can do it with out, but took ages of learning.

I put some pressure on the gear shift then come of the gas and it slots in.

It's been a few years since I've used the clutch for an upshift, but I don't ride on the road, I only have a race bike. I'm not sure that there is any real benefit to be had doing clutchless shifts on a road bike - it's not like you're actually racing anyone, and if you are and doing it on the road, the chances are you're not doing it well enough to see the benefit of getting the throttle on a few milliseconds early. If you're used to using the clutch, then you'll need to concentrate on your gearshifts, which will divert your attention from the road, and that great big truck coming the other way...
As doug suggests, you need to have pressure on the gear lever before you change.

Hiya all,
Did my 1st clutchless upshift today!..... Some questions 8)
On the cbr400, it went fab! So I experimented a bit.
My finds where:
- 3rd gear onwards, it was alot smoother, surprise surprise.
- 1st gear change to 2nd felt wrong and forced, no matter how smooth I tried to be.
My most succesful steps were:
Accelerating
Cut the throttle
Kick up to next gear after a slight pause
Smoothly wind on the throttle again.
I found that if I didn't pause before applying throttle, the bike would lurch, which makes me question how fast the gear change is compared to a "clutch in" change, where I could be quite aggressive on the throttle after changing up.
So.. My questions are:
Q) Refining technique: What is the correct way of doing it?
A) Bam on the throttle, straight away, once changed up - lurch but no
Damage
B) Pause for half a second, before applying throttle? It is deceptively quicker and smoother
Q) When should I be doing it?
- Only do for 3rd gear onwards?
- At what rpm range should I be doing the clutchless upshifts for a In Line 4 sports bike that revs to 14.5rpm?!
Q) Whacking on throttle - does it damage the gearbox?
Q3) Being smooth and taking time re-applying throttle
- is it still quicker than a "clutch in" change?
- Does speed of gear change and acceleration increase with practice?
- what's the point of it, if it takes just as long as a clutch in change?!

the point of doing clutchless gear changes is to cut the time it takes to change gear so unless you are fully on it its a bit pointless.
I do them is on track so I'm virtually at the the redline and fully on the throttle stop before I change gear, it takes a bit of practice but you just need to ease of the throttle for half a second while applying a small amount of pressue to the lever, then back on the stop again.
Like I say unless you are wanting to get maximum acceleration for the smallest amount of time they are pointless.
Something else you might want to learn if you dont do it already is blipping the throttle on downchanges this makes for a much smoother downshift but its a balancing act as you are usually braking at the same time therefore doing 4 things almost at once..... braking, blipping, changing gear and using the clutch.

Exactly as Tanuki says, its a pointless exercise if you're not nearing the limiter at full beans.

Does it work for 1st gear to 2nd gear though, for a standard nc29 gearbox?!
I've been at it a few times now, and it always feels different to higher up the gears.
Almost like it catches a neutral or something, before engaging.
