suspected water in engine???

Picked an rvf up off a guy yesterday. Ran well enough, though smell of fuel after ride was strong. Had nc30 and nver had this issue.,

Today i fired it up. Left running for ten minutes, noticed patch under can on rear. Appears to be water leaking out of fitting area from exhaust to end can. Also strong smell of fuel once sat??? I'm no mechanic but hows water in end can ? this mean i've got gasket issues? or terminal if not seen to!

any help would be much appreciated as i don't want it to expire. Guy claims he never had any issues, want to beleive this is true but hard to trust someone you never met before.

Sounds just like condensation.

I often get it dripping from the joint in the end-can.. you'll also find a drainhole in the end-can if it's the original honda one to let water out.

You'd be surprised how much condensation gets in there.. which is also why the mild steel parts rot.

did wonder that! seemed strange as i don't remember having this problem on the nc30??

1.07 gallons of water is produced for every gallon of petrol burnt, it will condense in the cold exhaust can.

That is one reason to run the motor up to working temperature and avoid short runs.

If the engine tick over is even and stable and a fuel smell is evident, probably and external leak.
Look at float bowl gaskets, hose connexions and tap.

Check for dampness with the aid of a torch.

Yes, I too found that was the fast way to find fuel leaks, but by the time I emerged from A & E, the bike was in the dump so I could not work out the original problem.

I have a better way now :-)

I get a strong smell of petrol if i leave the bike sat but i always have done no fuel leaks, if i turn the pet cock off then dont get the fuel smell, think its due to if you leave the pet cock on fuel is always going through to the carbs so might get a couple of drips now and again from the over flow pipes.

It isn't always going through with a normal fuel tap as they are vaccum operated.. they only let fuel through with the engine running / cranking over.

Unless your tap has been modified it will be this way.

Chance is you have a small leak aroudn the fuel tap, not bad enough to make things wet.

Do you smell fuel with the bike sat or is it when it's running? could be excessive choke, or has been said.. you have a leak somewhere.

Don't forget though if it's a hot / warm day the tank willl smell of fuel vapour being vented.
