yeah, porndogs VFR..

was ok, nice speed (being used to being restricted) just felt the handling was weird because he had a steering damper..

it felt like youd turn left but the bike would lean right. very odd feeling..

your not getting me, on my 23, i lean left, but turn to the right which is countersterring..

but on rickys bike when turning left it felt like the bike wanted to lean to the right (a bit like trying to left with your passenger leaning right)

it felt like that. like it didnt want to turn properly.. Ricky said my steering was twitchy or light or something along those lines, to me it is fine

i felt really unsafe at 50mph, the steering was twitchy and light, the same on my dads ZXR9 i love the damper it takes some much instabilty out of a bikes front end, it makes no difference in turning in or out of corners just adds extra feel and confidence in the turn.

maybe your should make a thread about counter steering as this has thread jacked the poor lasses thread, i have a good video to show you that ilustrates counter steering on an unbelieveable scale!

You get used to riding what you ride, so after a while anything becomes fine. I've ridden around on old knackers thinking they were great, only to switch to something newer and then back and think omg how did I ride this piece of crap.

However, I think you need to goto bike school.

What you describe is counter-streering without knowing what happens, and also bad riding technique unless your a moto-crosser.

Counter-steering is what happens when the gyro effect takes ahold of the bike, circa 15mph plus.

You push the left handlebar forwards (away from you) to turn left, if you think about it this is steering the bike right. And vice-versa.
but on rickys bike when turning left it felt like the bike wanted to lean to the right (a bit like trying to left with your passenger leaning right)
This is how all bikes work if you are going fast enough and try to physically steer left they goto the right. Incedentally, this is why a lot of accidents where a rider has to make a sharp manouver to avoid say a car backing out and dont' know how counter-steering works properly actually hit the car instead of avoiding it. You turn the bars towards the car which makes your bike lean in the opposite direction. But if your unaware, your instincts are to turn the bars away from the car which will make you lean towards and then hit it.

This isn't counter-steering, at least with any knoweldge of how it works. It actually sounds like just really bad riding technique.

So your saying you lean the opposite way to what you want to go? This is odd, your hands must be doing somethign weird.

Most people who counter-steer without knowing why or how it works lean left to go left, and vice-versa.. this happens because when leaning left you push the left handle bar away from you (turn right) so the bike drops over to the left.

However, what you have described means that your on top of the bike and not leaned into the turn, this produces a higher centre of gravity and is a style akin to a dirt-track motocross rider who pushes the bike beneath them.

If you understand countersteering properly, you can lean into the turn, say a left hander, you lean off to the left but you push left hand bar away from you to make the bike turn right but it drops over to the left (you can also pull the right-bar towards you)

Once you understand the principals you can adjust your body position wherever to get the best view / lowest centre of gravity if racing (to allow more lean angle / speed) You can also make finite adjustments to your lean angle without needing to 'lean' at all if you desire.

Otherwise you are just riding with blind luck as leaning doesn't do anything.. it's how you push/pull the bars which makes you steer.

Ride in a straight line upto 50mph loose the bars then then lean without holding the bars.. the bike won't do much.

Now instead, acellerate upto 50mph in a straight line and push the left hand bar away from you, as if to turn right, this will make your bike tip over to the left aka countersteer.. but you know how how and why it works.

Practice it to make your riding better.

i still think your not getting me. I know what countersteering is. I'm not a complete twat...

I'm struggling to explain what i mean without people jumping to conclusions.

It felt like his bike didn't want to steer properly. Whether because my steering is light and i'm used to it and ricky's isn't so light and felt unusual. Ricky's is the bike i've riden with a steering damper so perhaps it was that which caused it to feel wierd.

I've riden a fair few bikes. 50, 125's, 400 and 1200 none of which had wierd and unusual steering or a steering damper.
