What is road legal
Has anyone put a race bike on the road?
A friend wants to put this back on the road, it was built/modified for road racing.
He is getting a log book from the DVLA.
It has a starter but no generator or wiring loom, instrument or light brackets and a short subframe.
What is required for a daytime only MOT, or what is needed to be fully road legal,
Thanks,
Dave.

Put a horn on it and thats it dave, some testers ask for a speedo. I always put a brake light on but tape it over for the MOT,
A full MOT is too much work as everything has to work.

There is no spec for wheels, an MOT tester looked it up when he tested my bike with mag race wheels [HRC]hannakournikova wrote:Those wheels for a start!!! Send them my way and I will send him a road legal set for free.

That's what I told him, but he seems keen to get it fully legal, trouble is, all the original parts are missing, so a lot of work.Drunkn Munky wrote:Put a horn on it and thats it dave, some testers ask for a speedo. I always put a brake light on but tape it over for the MOT,

Perhaps he thinks I am going to do it, as I work on his other bikes, but not this time.
Dave.

Re: What is road legal
Easiest way is to get a standard loom, switchgear etc but you must have all lights and indicators. Ive been down the route of adding to the race loom and its a nightmare, much quicker to swap it out.
What he needs is a gsxr genni kit, complete with R6 reg, stick coils and lightweight race battery
i just so happen to have the lot for sale

Re: What is road legal
He wants "everything"? Well that means - for a start - generator, road loom and rectifier (as you won't get far on total loss with lights), horn, speedo, headlight, all aux lights including indicators (it's not old enough to have none legally), proper headlight / fairing subframe, both brakelight switches (those rearsets will need a pressure switch probably), mirrors, tail tidy suitable for full-sized numberplate, exhaust baffles... Shall we keep going?
Does he even (still) have a V5 and legal registration mark?

He is getting a V5, he took the bike to a local DVLA place today, and the numbers are on record and match up.amorti wrote:He wants "everything"? He knows roughly what's needed, but does not understand the work required.
I suggested a new loom, and he spoke of a GSXR generator.
I said buy a hydraulic brakelight switch and fit a standard front one, plus mirrors and leave it at that. I don't really want to get involved
