Final update, I hope
New plug in #4, slight improvement in heating, I had turned the pilot out by 1/2 turn
Idles OK, blip throttle returns below idle and then back.
Backed out all other idle screws by about 1/8th ish and it seems OK
Run at 5k let go of throttle, returns to about 1800, certainly under 2000, blip throttle returns to 1500 no stumbling.
I think without balancing with vacuum gauges this is as good as its going to get
Time to refit the plastics and give it a spin

The balance is close, I used a 1 1/2thou gauge with throttles closed, [throttle stop screw just touching cable drum.]
Should tick over evenly down to 1,200 rpm

I know it should, I'm not doubting what you did Dave, its within a gnats whisker of that and that is a massive improvement. it's good enough for me.

Why not come over some time when the sun shines, then we can swap over bikes and compare them and you may well go on your way rejoycing :-)

Sun shine? Have you seen the bloody weather forecast???
Sounds like a plan, however i know my old bike wouldn't compare with your pristine example and I'd be too worried about damaging it!

It's the engine response and running I am interested in, and you would have a reference.
You can ride the nc35 if you are worried agout scratching it :-)

If your ever over this way you can ride mine too
Mine idled at a 1000 with the carbs way out of balance but you could really hear it running 'lumpy', the vaccum balance just smoothes it out more.
