Re: NC24 Cylinder head and carbs
It is exactly that. Many people don't seem to be aware of the fact butDeadly_Viper wrote:nope its not that, they are just so old and stuck that its mashed the metal. going to get some pliers on them and failing that cut a groove across them.
The screws are a JIS (Japanese Industrial) standard, I can't think of the number. not phillips or cross-head. From memory theres #2 on the float-bowls.
A Philips #2 will damage these screws, especially if they are tight, the result is that the head gets stripped apart.
The driver fits but not perfect, if you use a JIS #2 the screwdriver will fit perfect and not damage these screws, i've taken apart many NC24 carbs, even ones with old hardened screws and not broken any using the proper gear.
Some european screwdrivers do a better job than others but you see so many people wrecking the screws on Japanese bikes, best to get the right tools for the job

Why you need Japanese Industrial Standard screwdrivers...
Improper screwdriver fit strips out screw heads, wastes valuable time, and makes hard work out of something that should've been rewarding.
When working with model airplanes, electronics, robotic servos or other equipment manufactured according to precision specifications, you need the proper tools. Always use the right tool for the job.
Japanese and other precision-made Phillips' head screws require screwdrivers that meet precise Japanese specifications, but many common American and European screwdrivers don't meet those specs. Our JIS screwdrivers do. They'll save you time, money, and needless frustration.

Many people don't.Deadly_Viper wrote:Gosh, I didn't know that, I thought a screw was a screw :S

I striped an NC30 set of carbs today and reassembled without wrecking any screws.
The screws have a small dot on them, this indicated they are not philips but a JIS size.

Re: NC24 Cylinder head and carbs
I recently saw about the JIS bits, someone was working on a Suzuki GS650GT and noticed the dots on all of the screws and wondered what they meant, when told they suddenly realised why alot of the screws rounded (apart from the bike being sat for 20 years!)

Re: NC24 Cylinder head and carbs
Well my NC30 is 22 years old and the carbs were all factory so dont think they were messed with.BillingCBR wrote:I recently saw about the JIS bits, someone was working on a Suzuki GS650GT and noticed the dots on all of the screws and wondered what they meant, when told they suddenly realised why alot of the screws rounded (apart from the bike being sat for 20 years!)
They came apart easy with the right screw-driver.

Does anyone know where to get a set of JIS screwdrivers easily that's not a website? Would a RC model place be a good start?
