800 miles into nc30 life.... and I have a problem!

Hi,

I have done about 800 miles or so since restoring my bike back to the road after some years sitting in someones garage.

All has been well, unitll tonight i got home and could only describe as an almost eggy smell, my mate recons its sulphur from the batter, he recons that the battery has boiled dry due to over charging, if this is correct im guessing im yet the next victim of the dreaded rectifier?

So If i re fill the battery with deionised water will i be ok for a 40 mile trip until a new rectifier areives??

Also whats the best rectifier to get as i hear people fitting R6 ones etc??

Any help as always is much appreciated.

No do not refil it.

If it is over-charging you risk the battery exploding and / or setting fire.

The NC30 doesn't go very well when it's on fire.

You need to determine if your charging sytem is working before you ride it any further.

A simple multimeter will do the trick

Set it to DC volts (20v if its manual) and measure the battery voltage at idle and at 5000rpm

As soon as you see over 15v it's bad, if you see 19v you are in danger territory, so don't run it too long.

When you say restored it, did you do any powder coating or maybe paint the subframe? It seems to me that that often stops the regulator working quite as it should do.

Ive had the subframes powder-coated on my bikes for years, i always space the reg / rec away from the subframe on copper washers. Ive never had a problem.
I use an uprated sun reg / rec, as the original set its self on fire, prior to the subframe being powder-coated on my main bike.

How hot should the reg rec get? I've got an r6 one and i can feel it slow roasting my left butt cheek after a long ride...is this normal?

I've checkedthe voltages - all fine- doesn't go past 14.5v. new battery and generator have been fitted too so i know they're ok.

When you replace the reg, run an extra earth off the reg body to the battery.

@ jetblack - reg recs get fucking hot. Mine is too hot to touch after a few mins of idle...

@ th OP - change the reg rec. Don't risk a battery problem that might burn your nuts!

a Yamaha reg rec (or a mosfet reg rec...google it) is the answer - if it has 5 line sin, 3 genny and pos/earth you are rocking.

Don't ride it if it stinks of eggs, it is not cool in any way!

Is it worth adding some reflective heat tape to the inside of the fairing or can the fairing cope with the heat? The R6 reg rec is so big i've had to remove some of the foam thats stuck to the inside of the fairing to stop if fouing on the reg. Worried its now going to melt my plastics/paint!
