Re: VFR400 rebuild
i never thought id be asking such a dinny question but i need to, have i put loads of shit into carbs? iv cleaned carbs hundreds of times but im struggling with cleaning the 4 bolted together without thinking iv put crud into the fuel passages somehow. basically what i did befor cleaning the internals was use a whole can of carb cleaner on the outsides first, they was a mess see. toothebrush and a whole can later, shiney carbs.
but now iv opened them to clean the internals, one min the jets are clean and see through them, then after a little clean with some fine wire and high pressure carb cleaner, blow through again and now they looked blocked again. i had this last night with every pilot jet tbh. one min it looked clean, then the next it didnt.
so have i some how pushed aload of crap from my carb bodies into the path of the fuel system of the carbs internals?? as far as i could see all the carbs but 1 had like a outside ventri whole, the others all looked LED blocked at the front, do all the carbs feed air just from the rubber trumpets at the top!? or can they draw it in anywhere else from their lower bodies on these carbs!
im thinking of biting the bullet if im not happy with the jets and jusy order a complete new set for all 4. im going to clean them again today first, but something aint right i swear.

Re: VFR400 rebuild
checked the rear plugs, as black as bill cosby, was hesitant to change the jetting thinking it might be set up for a rich resson. think im gunna re jet befor putting carbs back on now. i already down jetted to the 122s on the rear, so may aswel go with the standard jetting on the uk carbs as the rest matches inside part from the mains. , ill sleep on it and decide in morning. re cleaned the carbs too earlier, much happier with them now. worked my way through both the air cannels and the fuel lines-carbs etc.
swopped over the lower rad for my nice clean and straight one
drained the coolent system.
so tommorrow gunna remove top rad, check valves in the front 2 cylinders. new coolant, oil filter ,engine oil.
is it true that to bleed the new coolent all thats needed is to tick the bike over for 5 mins!? haynes says this but wont there be air pockets/air locks? how do you lads do it?
cheers for all the help last few days fellas too. im a 4t noob at the mo, dive in and learn is the best way.

I removed mine when I initially changed the coolant but when I had to fanny around with carbs and throttle cables just days after the change and it was easier with the top rad off I just drained it from the water pump and when I reconnected it all up and refilled it I ran it with the rad cap off until it got hot, blipped throttle, squeezed hoses etc, got water all over the kin front wheel though as it spits it out when revving/overrun. Anyway, let it cool, refill rad to top, fill expansion tank, run it again and get it warm, blip throttle etc and job done
