Engine out job.
It'll hit the swining arm otherwise.
Might be possible other ways but i've always dropped the engine as quoted in the Honda service manual, also not heard of anyone doing it any other way..

If you cut the rear pipes off so the collector comes loose under the bike, you can get them off the engine by taking the shock out but you can't get the new one in with out removing the engine. Just done it myself heres my rebuild blog.

Truth be told its a right pain in the ass but I did it in a day on my own so anythings possible.

nope no special tools, just new gaskets for the headers, be careful where you support the engine when you drop it other wise you won't be able to get the new collector in place.

I didn't take it out all the way just far enough to get the new one in.

You have 4 bolts in the back of your NC24!?
There shoudln't be any in the back.. is the plastic broken? I've seen quite a few with nuts and bolts there...

There shouldn't be ANY bolts or nuts in the rear.
It just looks broken and bodged like that
If all the lugs are intact the rear should look like this...

Re: collector box removal NC24
I heard Motad were working on their mk2 version for the NC24, the mk2 systems don't require engine removal ti get the collector box out IIRC Chownsy is the person to speak to, I recall he had spoken with them on another forum
