Carb- refitting, new rubbers, easy? is it f&*K!!!!

Soaking for an hour and a couple of near misses and they went on

Whacked them down with a mallet and block of wood, tightened clips, refitted air filter, tank etc, fired her up and................................

Fuck me it started, minor panic as I forgot to relocate the idle speed adjuster, did that, left it running for a bit to get warm, and its on the road to recovery.

Throttle is a bit slow to respond initially but I'll work on that.

I find it easy to put them on and dont' grease the rubbers.. maybe i'm doing it differently to what your doing?

The first couple of times working on these bikes I found it difficult but now it doesn't take more than a few seconds.. no blocks of wood or anything.

I'm bidding on a CBR250RR and an NC30 at the moment.. if I win the NC30 i'll remove the carbs and make a how-to video :-)

Congrats, and now that you know that you can handle the NC30's most annoying task, everything else will seem simple by comparison!

And you didn't do what I've done twice, which is to get them on before fitting the throttle cables...

oldgreyandslow - I missed this thread, but I'm glad to hear a happy ending!

FWIW, I've been removing and re-fitting my carbs 4-5 times while hunting an air leak. Maybe this isn't the Haynes way of doing it, but the following worked for me:

• Seat the front two carbs in the front two carb rubbers. I kept the lower clamps tight, and the upper clamps loose.
• Push the carbs firmly forward and down to get the rear carbs to align with the rear rubbers. Note, at this stage they're one centimeter apart, and it looks like they will never fit.
• Take one block of wood and one mallet. Apply to top of carbs and hit firmly. Press the carbs forwards by hand using full bodyweight. After a few goes, the rear carbs should nearly align with the rear rubbers.
• Using a flat bladed screwdriver carefully prise the rubbers so they fit around the outside of the rear carbs as they begin to be seated.
• Hit the block of wood, downwards, to seat the carbs, and pushing the carbs forwards and down, until the carbs are fully seated. Be careful not to push the bike off the stand!
• Tighten the upper collars

That should do it. Someone else said soak the rubbers in petrol beforehand, to soften them. I haven't had to do this, but some new rubbers are on their way from Rick this week, so we'll see...

You don't need mallets or hammers!

When I pick this 30 up i'll be checking the carbs anyhow so will make a video

You guys need to get yourself a couple "shoehorns", or a couple strips of aluminium about twelve inches long and half an inch wide, 2mm thick with the edges all nice and smooth. If at all possible put a small bit of curve on them too, although is not essential.

Give your rubbers a wipe with WD40 or whatever, then push the two front carbs home and nip up the clamps to hold them in place. Now with the "shoehorn" inserted into each of the rear rubbers pointing to the rear of the bike, press home the two rear carbs. The "shoehorns" act as both a guide to route the carbs to the rubbers, and help prise the rubbers out slightly making them open a little to receive the carbs easier.

Once the carbs start to go into the rubbers, pull the two "shoehorns" out at the same time pressing the carbs home. Piece of cake, I shit you not. I used to refit my carbs in under two minutes flat using this technique - no hammers, no fat chicks (wtf is a fat chick anyway!? Surely a contradiction in terms?), no swearing and the cat still comes looking for a stroke!
