As above and make sure the clips are properly loosened off. The clips may be stopping the rubbers from stretching over the carbs.

 no it doesnt sound like your doing anything wrong.

Start again, make sure the rubbers are properly seated on the engine but leave the clamps loose, clean em up and regrease em, position the clips so you can get to them all, take a deep breath and go for it

I think they may be too loose, the clips ride up over the rubbers when I try stretching/levering them, I'm doing them tight enough to stay in place, but still move but maybe this is actually too loose?

Frustration? FFS I can write a bloody book on it with this bike!

You should put a web cam up in the garage, just for us to see you kick the cat

I really cant see what your doing wrong, ive never had an issue with the clips coming off, have you got a pic of the rubbers on the engine?

I'll bring the laptop in, the poor bloody cat, she's pretty old too.

I have the rubbers off again now, sitting in a pot of just boiled water. Reading Haynes re the alignment/positioning of the rubbers I have them the right way up as far as engine and carb faces go, but should it be small slot towards the front on the front carbs, and small slot towards the back of the bike on the rear ones?

This may be where I went wrong, well one of the ways anyhow as I had the small slot in each case pointing towards the centre of the engine

I'm going to leave the rubbers steeping, change the water every now and again to keep them warm, make peace with the cat and try again in about half an hour or so, in the mentime a cup of tea is in order

If youve got RVF rubbers i dont think you can go wrong with the positioning of them, just put the tappered bits to the outside
