Fitting X ring chain - Help needed

Hello, I have just brought a AFAM X Ring chain and sprocket set for my vfr 400 nc30.

I have fitted both front and rear sprockets and I am now stuck on fitting the chain.

The problem is closing the master chain link, I tried using malgrips and the 1/4 inch socket and G-clamp method but was unsuccessful. Should I use a specialist tool to do this or does anyone have an easier solution??

Also, once closed up, should there be a split clip to secure the link, the diagram illustrates there should, but no clip came in the box ?... I wonder whether AFAM use the same box for all their products as it explains both O ring and X ring chains.

see if the new link has a groove in each peg (that go through the chain) if not it's the type that needs riveting, and theres a special tool for it (although I've been told it's possible to do it so it will hold, but would prefer to use the proper tool)

the chain tool is probably the best way saves flaffing around . the side plate is a tight interference fit on the pins and the tool makes it go on evenly remember to grease the pins and rings before putting plate on most kits come with a sachet of white grease , the hollow rivet links are easier to splay but if its a solid link then they can be peened over by holding a hammer face at back of rivet and use another hammer nail punch or similar at front to peen over it helps if you can get an assistant . i usually mark the link with a dab of paint on the side plate so i can easily visually check it after a few miles to see all is in order.

The tool I need for the vfr 400 nc30 is a chain size 525, the cheapest I can find them on ebay is £32 inc postage. However, im sure it would work out cheaper for a garage to quickly rivet it for me probably for free.....

The link will not go through the plate without pressure, so I will press it through and splay it out as much as I can and then ride daintily to the garage to reinforce it.

I will probably order one if I see one cheaper on ebay in future,
