Refitting camshafts issue.
Im replacing the gaskets on the bike and have split the engine, lapped in the valves and just reinstalling the rear cylinder head.
Got the static timing mark set to T1 and the marks on the camshafts away from the head. Cylinder 1 seems fine the cams arent touching shim pressing things, (technical name?!) although on Cylinder 3 they are tight and seem to be opening the valves very slightly, on both intake and exhaust. Its almost as if the cams want to be turned a tooth so that the timing marks on the camshafts are just just off the mark on the holders.
Not checked the front yet as still have to do the valves on it.
Doesnt seem right to me! Has anyone else come across a similar issue, better still any way to sort it?

Re: Refitting camshafts issue.
I have found that mine are never exactly on the mark. From memory the front mark is 0.5mm behind and the rear is about the same perhaps a little more. Best to loosen the cam holders and re-set the cams back onto the gear one tooth each way and you will see if you are in the right spot.

That puts my mind to rest thanks.
Figured its better the valves are shut and the marks dont line up than visa versa and it runs like shit!
Know Ive got to do the shims having lapped the valves but didnt think I had ground that much off them making the shims that far out!!

yer it is surprising how much you take off when you lap the valves in.

Re: Refitting camshafts issue.
Well tried moving them and its further out than I thought!
Had to move them about 2-3 teeth out!! Im sure they were almost spot on when I took them off!
Set to T1 so the piston is at the top of the cylinder,
The exhaust and intake valves on rear cylinder.
The shim clearances are only around 0.0015 all the way round and less than that in places, seems strange the inlet and exhaust clearances are basically the same.

It looks like you need to do another 180 or 360deg turn on the crank as the line should be lined up better than they are in the pics.

Turns out I was being a complete numpty, suffering sleep deprevation I reckon. For some reason I had it in my head that both cylinders would be aTDC or BDC so there would be no presssure on the valves.
Ah well after a coffee I soon figured it out.

Re: Refitting camshafts issue.
Yer the top half is done, measured the shims and put an email across to Rick. Need to replace the oil pump and related gaskets and slump. Same with thermostat, water pump and coolant unions.
Then I can get it out the flat and refit it in the fame and do the clutch
May still get it on the road by the end of July yet! :)
