NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
Question
is there a way to check whether either the thermo switch? or the thermo sensor? are are goosed, apart from the temperature gauge not moving and the the fan not coming on? or both

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
both independant to there selves,
the fan switch just switches to neutral about 95degrees ish, test the fan buy removeing the plug off the fan switch sensor and short to earth if the fan comes on then either switch is knackered or you have a poor earth between the radiator and the bike frame,
temp sensor dont have the haynes to hand but theres a ohms reading to be made, the sensore is just a potensiometer, failing that check for voltage to the temp guage which again loose wiring, or no live or earth means the guage wont work.

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
They both work off different sensors so sounds like multiple problems.
Firstly lets start with the easy one.
The fan.
On your radiator at the upper let section you'll see the thermo-switch.. with the igntiion on (bike doesn't have to be running) remove the spade connector.. (it's only one wire) and earth it to a good point.. the metal fairing bracket nearby is a good place... the fan should spin.
If the fan doesn't spin the fan is knackered.. check the wiring plug is ok. (usually these can go batshit correded)
If the fan does spin then your either not getting the coolant system hot enough (either just not hot enough or not run for long enough, or air-lock etc) or the sensor is busted)
The temp gauge.
This is fed from just by the themostat housing (sitting on the bike its' on the side of the front right cylinder) you'll see one wire with a shroud going into it.. with the ignition on pull this wire off.. the temperature should goto full.
if it doesn't you have a knackered temp gauge.. if it does you have a knackered sensor.

Cheers Guys
will do that to-nite after chores etc let you know how I get on

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
Well done the simple tests
1 the fan works
2 the temp gauge works
3 the temp sensors fecked
Rats cocks, better order one
reading into it though the fan should still operate but the gauge will not register?
Q. on replacing the sensor will this mean a partial drain down, or does the sensor fit in a pocket
and not require any draining down

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
just undo with spanner or socket then with the left hand undo the rest and the new in the right hand ready to swap straight over youll loose minimal fluid just top it up otherwise, obviously do it when the bike is cold.
that what i did balls to draining to swap it over.

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
Hang on...
So the temperature gauge isn't registering or the fan comming on?
Thats odd... I can't see both sensors being goosed.
Maybe the water isn't circulating?
Explain for me a bit clearly what happens :)

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
Right I will start again lol, using Neosophists guide
1 Testing the fan
Ignition on, disconneted the the lead from the thermo switch, and earthed it to the frame, fan bursts in to life so the fan runs ok, so far so good, so does this mean that the switch is fine and dandy or the fans fine but the switch is ferked, I must say that when I am riding the said moteur bicyclette, I very rarely stop, the bike does not stand at lights maybe one set, so apart from the odd sunday drivng screen sniffers it gets a good flow of air, on the other hand I have never heard the fan running, with all those gears a whirring and me lid on, so as for water flow, and temperature increase, I could not be sure and can only assume that the bike is at working temp and err not beyond
2. Testing the Gauge and the thermo sensor?
Ignition on, disconneted the the lead from the thermo sensor, no movement on the on the temp gauge,
so is the gauge fecked? however earth the thermo sensor lead to the frame, gauge flies up to max so is the gauge o.k ? or is the gauge fine but the sensor is goosed or am I missing something here or has it just been lost in the description
or is the just the fan and the gauge that are fine and both the the switch and the sensor have met their maker.
fork and knife who would have an NC24

Re: NC 24 COOLING SYSTEM
The NC24 doesn't get very hot compared to the NC30.. if the fan works like you say then the fan is ok.
You can test the fan switch by allowing the bike to idle for ages (rev it occasionally) the fan comes on when the needle is almost into the red zone!
I don't think there'll be anything wrong with the switch. If you have access to a digital thermometer you can put it next to the thermoswitch and watch the temp.. it should kick the fan in aroudn 95c.
Another way is to remove it and measure the resistance of the switch.. put it in a pan of boiling water and carefully not to burn yourself measure the restistance.. it should drop!
As for the temp gauge were gettings somewhere now...
Earthign the sensor causes the gauge to fly to hot but the gague doesn't move normally right? Then i'd say the temperature sender switch has died! Gauge seems to behave normally.
I'd start by replacing the temperature switch which should give you a working gague... you'll loose some coolant when doing this so top it up, you could always change the coolant if you havn't and refresh this, bleed the air and observe the gague.
Now... the gague should be working ok so watch the needle.. when it gets to the red-line the fan should kick in, if it doesn't you have a knackered themroswitch too.
Hope that helps :-)
