Project - NC23 / 600RR body work

Post by Jakey Boy » Mon Aug 18, 2008 8:59 pm

Basically I've got started fitting 600RR bodywork to my NC23, which used to look like this:

Image

I've now got round to fitting an nc29 rear wheel, which took a little more fettling to fit than I first expected. The wheel and corresponding assembly (including the sprocket carrier and spacers) is a bit wider than the nc23 kit. Incidently I got out the grinder and took off the 'nubs' on the inside surface on the rear calliper mount which get in the way. But I also found the rear disc bolt heads were fouling slightly somewhere on that mount so those got the grinding treatment aswell.

Moving on, everything stripped from the rear subframe and trying the 03/04 600RR race seat for fit:

I then did some guestimating and set to work cutting up the subframe

Then I got a bit distracted with the need to chop the silencer in half which I'd been meaning to do for some time. I had intended to take it to me dad's workplace where they have a big band saw which would make chopping it in half easy as piss. Instead I resorted to a hack saw. Refitted the tail pipe and it now looks like this; (as well as being twice as loud :D )

Finally after getting my crappy little welder to spark up I got round to stitching on one of the original rear seat brackets in a new position so I could loosely bolt on the tail but I'm not entirely happy with the position. Need to trim the side panels back, lift the whole thing at the front of the seat base a little bit more, fabricate/fold some aluminium brackets and then sort out how to mount number plate, tail light and indicatiors.

In general, also need two or three links taken out the chain to bring the rear wheel back to the front of its adjustment.

Anyway after a couple hours work this is how I left it:

Sorry about the poor imadges, taken with an old Nokia brick.

I think to make short tail unit will look more interesting than this one. This is just my personal opinion mate. Something like this.
This is NC29, but it just idea.

these me thinking it was a 600 lump in to a NC23 frame..

have you got the side panels as well?
rear lights... would a CBR6 lights not fit the tail unit? wiring it in to old loom is easy so long as you know what wire does what.

Rear light on the cbr 6 is on the numberplate bracket that sits under the underseat exhaust, so dusnt look rite as you have a big opening where the exhaust should be, , you will need to build an undertray and but a custom light to fit in the whole where the exhaust would go.

Ah, see what you mean

I'm now in the process of ebaying some panels from a 600RR to go on the front.

Incidently if anyone wants some original nc23 plastics for small money send me a PM / email.

As for the rear light and no. plate hanger, I was thinking of mounting something like this to save on space and weight etc...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... :IT&ih=021

I could fit an original 600RR style tail light, something like this would be cool:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CBR600RR-CBR1000R ... 286.c0.m14
I could then do away with the old style indicators but it might be tricky securing the thing properly right at the back of the tail where there's no longer any metal to mount it to.

Also does anyone know the ID, OD and type of plastic they use for those HRC race, rear brake resivour kits?
Must be cheaper to buy a bit of tube and make my own.
That should save the hassle of remounting the current resivour.

Got an nc23 Aero gear lever on its way in the post which should be a good replacement for the nakered gear linkage on my bike.

If anyone spots the obvious parallels between my own bike and drew70's race bike then please forgive my blatant attempt at duplicating his ideas :scared:

id go with the 2nd ebay link.

heres a bit of info on LEDs.
they are all "directional". when you buy them look at the specs for the "viewing angle", now imagine a cone coming off the LED with the LED at the sharp end. if you stand inside that cone, you will see the LED clearly, step out of the cone and you wont see the LED clearly or at all!.
your tail is angled down, so youd be lighting up the pavement, not directed at the driver behind. my tail lights are angled upwards and in fog its like following a light sabre!

Not if you use the 03/04 600RR rear - the original light is at the rear fairing.

Day off work on wednesday which I used to work on the bike, result looks like this:

As you can probably tell, it's far from a properly sorted job, still needs some finishing, such as taking off some old brackets and tabs while adding new ones here and there, as well as making something more substantial to support under the seat base, but for now it gets me to and from work cheaper than the car.
I'll explain better exactly what I've done at a later date.

About an hour ago I was driving home and stopped to sort out an ambulance for a fella who'd come of his bike, he wasn't doing too great when I got to him but the paramedics have taken him to hospital so hopefully he's doing ok.
