Custom Loom

Post by iDemonix » Fri Jun 24, 2011 7:40 pm

Just out of interest has anyone here ever made their own loom from scratch? The reason I ask is because mine could probably do with a new one as it's been snipped in places etc but it all seems to work - although my full beam has broken again.

A mod I'd love to do is to move the HI + LO beam relays to under the rear seat like the fuse box, would be even better if there's a form of adapter/plug so you could plug the relays in like you plug a plug in your house in to a socket. They're in a bit of a shit location and relays aren't that small, my HI relay has got wet and corroded (and I think water + heat of the engine has ruined it inside as I can't get it to work). And the LO rattles around.

Seems like it'd be a fairly hard and lengthy (hey hey) project but fun nonetheless, would also be great to move those annoying relays. I'm sure I saw someone who made one on here not long ago and braided it somehow (looked a million times better than the standard shitty black tape wrap).

A mate of mine made a loom for an Austin mini using proper braiding and stuff, looked ace and all the wires were perfect length.

i used to work for a loom makers/Cable harnesser's,i was there production controller for a good few years and im good friends with the guy that owns the business as he calls on me to help him out when things get too busy on orders,
i am currently talking to him about remaking my loom , using all new plugs sockets as the original or maybe swap out some for newer types and better braids and heatshrink rather than tape, as the loom industry has moved on over the last 20 odd years since honda made these ,
this could be pushed towards him if say a handfull were made instead of just one , i did say there could be a few people who might want one , so i will continue to press him to make some up

Ooooh i like the way this thread is going....
Theres not much left that needs modernising and improving on these bikes. As it happens i was cleaning and checking some wiring connections today and the insulation tape looks crap and bits were peeling off etc! I presume this wont cost much to do and will be modern, tidy and probably weigh a little less than stock.

So lets see some samples then chaps!!

i dont have any pics of the loom i did, i emailed them jonny wishbone if he still has them, if not ask him for a pic of the loom, i just used fresh insulation tape, on his as it was a race loom and he and i didnt want excess weight.

heres some pics of the reg/rec plug ive just redone with and old but in better condition NC30 plug, also redid my alternator to loom plug/sockets again they have taken a thermal battering,

but the tip of the day is to rub the surface of the mail spades down to a clean brass surface, then apply a small layer of solder, the female side just give them a little pressure with a pair of pliers,

all the male and female crimps come out of the plugs with a long pointy tool (dental scraper) or small screwdriver

anyway pics

I like the way this thread is turning out :D

What do people think of my relays in the rear idea?

Pointless, extra cable, extra weight!

the headlight looms are fine when in a rubber boot as designed.

my additional dipped/lowbeam relay is in the main rubber boot on the left hand side, of the engine.

no i know that but your ADDING weight i didnt say how much, but in the scheme of things you making the run for the head light and high beam wiring longer creating more wear and tear, also adding more resistance to the circuits/wires, remember the longer the cable gets the lower the voltage gets and the higher the current it then carries, its a fundimental electrical science principle.

if mr honda put the relays there he did it for a reason.

the bikes are 20+ years old and are going to have corroded stuff, afterall these are bikes and most people dont have garages store them out side, run them in all weathers etc, once you clean up and maintain stuff you should have a problem again.
