Mechnic just refused to work on my bike!

Cool so with a bit of a rub back with some wet and dry and if they are not in the swept area too much i may be ok?

Do you mind me asking how much you weigh as i guess this will affect the amount of fork travel? i only weigh 75kg

I'm nervous to ride the bike with them leaking as they are (Not passed my test yet anyway-its booked for monday!) so a ride to wolverhampton, although very kind of you, may not be a good idea.

im 10st 10lbs so thats about 68KG?

ps good look with test,

if the oil is pissing out its a concern but if its a dribble it wont be to bad to come over, the trick is clean it off as best as you can and stick a ring of tissue under the dust seal, (MOT TRICK)

its the braking thats the biggest cause of fork compression not the bumps as such,

im just thinking least then you ll have a safe bike to ride and then you can buy the parts and rebuild your old ones later on, then you learn somin along the way plus you can either swop them back over with my ones if yours are better nick and sell them on.....old type forks are a twat to come across believe, i looked for months, so asking 50 quid for them is fair price. just a thought anyways

I've no idea what the extent of travel is on the forks. i thought these pits looked pretty high up and unlikely to be in the swept area?

That is well inside the travel area, and will definitely cause your forks to leak. More than the pits, you also (if I am reading the photo right) have "stripes" down the forks, which don't help. Sorry.

If you want to try and repair them, degrease with brake cleaner VERY thoroughly (literally do it about 5 times) then put a small amount of araldite over the pits, then smooth back to flat with VERY fine wet and dry, we are talking about 1800 to start then 2500 to finish. The "stripes" are much harder to sort out, I would say verging on impossible.

Sadly this probably won't be a permanent fix. The other choice is replacing, or rechroming, rechroming is probably dearer but at least you are starting from as-new. Assuming their tolerance is 100% dead-on, anyway...

this works my dad did the same on his moto guzzi forks , used thinners to de-grease the forks then used 5min epoxy as a filler then rubbed down , its a quick fix but not long term solution tho

I'll buy a head stock stand off ebay and have at it. I've got some chemical metal- will that work in place of the Araldite/epoxy?

If it only lasts 5 months that at least gets me into the winter when i can then decide to either replace with later type forks or have mine re chromed.
