Re: VFR400 rebuild
a new day, iv chilled abit now lol
a quick one for you guys though, front calipers...............there in a sorry state and iv got some classic problems, 2 pots moving in each, not all 4 unless the other 2 are held back, so not seized but not moving in unison.
i dont really have the funds at the mo to refurb them both! can just a seal kit be bought?? and are you allowed /safe to remove the pots and polish them up and re-use?? this would save me some cash. cash i dont actually have...... i dont want to do my front brakes on the cheap mind!!! so if i NEED to replace the lot, ill do so, just wonderd if its something peeps do.....
i take it too that once the pots are out that the seals are a goner too...
yesterday i spent an hour on one of the calipers, got the pots right out and placed a piece of metal between the 4 running in the middle, so they were still in but loads on view and went crazy with the cleaning.....they come up well considering but all 4 pots still wont move all together!!! im imagining that tbh even after a full caliper refurb that it would be tricky getting all 8 pistons excerting the same amount of force to the discs anyways, there d always be ones that would bite first, or am i looking for a silver lining to my problem.....
any advise here guys please

Re: VFR400 rebuild
Ive removed pistons/seals etc in the past and re-used them, obviously only if there in good condition but it worked fine for me. Id just remove them and see what state there in mate

Re: VFR400 rebuild
cheers tony, i see your thread mate about it so was interested to here how you got on....im hesitant to remove them completely incase i cause more problems, im looking to keep them in their holes and clean as much around them as poss and re-lube the edges?? then see if i can get them all moving freely.... of cource, if that dosnt work ill bite the bullet and take them out, this is then when i say to myself, well there out now, may aswel buy new seals etc lol see my issue.
havnt read the other post yet so appoligy if i ask twice but is it safe to remove the gold coating when cleaning the pots?? or am i looking to use the softest way possible to clean them?? im not gunna use metal or nothing but some of the black crud just wont budge with the toothbrush and brake cleaner....
cheers ricky for the offer pal, id deffo take you up on that but im trying to do it all quick as poss while i have the time off. i watched that guys video too, lad on here about cleaning the pots but he removed his one! im trying to leave them in if i can..... or am i clutching straws??
cheers monkey n dog

Re: VFR400 rebuild
Have you got a tool for removing them? The one brought was dead cheap and makes removing and refitting them very easy. I just did one pot at a time checking and cleaning the seals as i went, i wouldnt worry about taking them out.

Re: VFR400 rebuild
as i said that gold build up is boiled on brake fluid which is one of the causes of the brakes sticking,
you need to get it off, maybe a bit of autosol on a soft cloth will do the job make sure you clean the pistons off with brake cleaner before refitting.

Re: VFR400 rebuild
all done fellas
the 2nd caliper wasnt as bad, the pistons looked half decent, i removed all the gold shit as said and polished them right up....fitted new lines and bleed, 10 mins later, i have solid brakes
no spongy shit at all. was well worth all the fking about in the end.
i went to fit my clutch cable but am unsure if its correct, i have a cable fitted that is bent lever end and straight at the other end, my new one is bent both ends?? can anyone confirm if the cable i have is for an early K model nc30!? cheers. my ones same as this one if that helps....
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-VFR400-NC30 ... 3368b2814a
also CMS!! undone all the pinch bolts , gave every thing a whack and now the wheel and yokes are straight
good man
last thing today, does the handle bar only come out of the clip-on mounts one way!? coz i cant pull mine out, its like the end is splade.... i cant remove the fking screws under the switch gear either
or remove my bar weights lol all held in by blooy philips screws, they rounded in a second. doh!
